I love waking up to the sound of birds in my backyard garden.

Those who love to feed the birds often get aggravated when it seems the squirrels are scaring away the birds and eating all the food. Though it could be seen as the battle of the fittest, I can understand the frustration. It can be hard to get rid of squirrels, and most of the time it’s next to impossible. That is why it is a good idea to focus on redirecting the squirrels rather than wishing them away. This is something that my grandfather has been doing for a long time.

He, like my mother, loves to feed the birds and has numerous bird feeders, and they both have feeders all over their respective properties. They don’t have to worry about the squirrels when it comes to hummingbirds, as the squirrels don’t care for what they eat. However, most other types of bird food are welcome fare to them. Many can be seen climbing up and getting into the bird feeders. There are some bird feeders that are made to get rid of squirrels by making it impossible for them to get to the food, but even these don’t work all of the time.

My grandfather decided that he should make sure the squirrels had something that they would like even more than the bird seed. He was a farmer so this was easy for him to figure out. Squirrels love nuts, but they also love dried kernels of corn. There are many different squirrel feeders on the market, but if you want to get rid of squirrels around your bird feeders you don’t even need the feeders if you don’t want to have them, you can just spread the corn out in a different direction. The feeders are great though.

There are other things on the market used to get rid of squirrels, but I couldn’t say if they work or not. They might be worth a try though, especially if the squirrels are driving you nuts. Squirrels live where they live and don’t move around much, so it can be hard to get rid of squirrels no matter where you are, but there are methods of diversion that have worked well for many. My grandfather was always able to keep them out of the bird food with corn, so that might work for most others as well. Though no special feeder is needed, they can work rather well, and they aren’t terribly expensive either.

Many gardeners do not even consider fall gardening because of the winter frosts that might make an early appearance.  On the contrary, fall gardening will result in excellent vegetables and will extend crops long after spring planted plants are finished.  Vegetables produced from fall gardening are sometimes sweeter and milder than those grow in the summer and offer a brand new taste to the same old veggies.

What you choose to grow during you fall gardening will depend on your available space and what you like to eat, just like spring plants.  Even the crops that enjoy the heat, such as tomatoes, sweet potatoes, okra, and peppers, will produce until frosts hit, which can be pretty late in the year in southern areas.  However, there are some plants that will quit towards the end of summer like snap-beans, summer squash, and cucumbers.  If these vegetables are planted around the middle of the summer they can be harvested until the first frosts as well.  Hardy, tough vegetables will grow until the temperature is as low as 20 degrees, but those that aren’t as strong will only be able to grow through light frosts.  Remember that if you have root and tuber plants and the tops are killed by a freeze the edible part can be saved if a large amount of mulch is used.

Many gardeners will run from fall gardening so they don’t have to deal with frosts, but if tough, sturdy vegetables are planted they can withstand a few frosts and give you some wonderful tasting produce.  Fall gardening gives you the chance to enjoy your vegetable garden for at least a little bit more time.

Herbs have been around since time immemorial and served different kinds of purposes. They have been used to treat illness and flavour cooking; they were even believed to have magical powers.  Do you want to have your own herb garden?  Here are a few ideas on how to establish an herb garden.

Plan your garden.

Consider the herbs you want to plant.  Think about their types.  Would you like annuals, biennials or perennials?

How much space will they occupy in your garden?  If you want, you can purchase a book that can give you the right information on what specific plants you are planning to grow.

List or draw your garden on paper first.  Separate the annuals from the perennials so when the time comes that you have to pull out the annuals, you won’t be disturbing the perennials.  Perennials can be planted on the edge of your garden so when it is time to till your garden they won’t be in danger of getting dug up.

Another thing to remember is that you have to plant the tall ones at the back and the shorter ones in front.  Also, provide your plants with enough space to grow. Proper position shall help you in this area.

If you would rather keep herbs out of your garden (and some are quite invasive) you could have herb pots. These are large containers with three or more outlets for the herbs. Fill the pot up to the first outlet and plant it before continuing on with the filling and planting process. Usually, the herb that requires the most water is planted in the bottom hole, while the variety that requires the least, goes in the highest hole.

Part of your backyard landscape design could include raised planting beds for a beautiful herb garden.

If you want to start a raised garden in a non grassy area, you won’t have much trouble. Just find some sort of border to retain the dirt you will be adding. I’ve found that there is nothing that works quite as well as a few two by fours. After you’ve created the wall, you must put in the proper amount soil and steer manure. Depending on how long you plan to wait before planting, you will want to adjust the ratio to allow for any deteriorating that may occur.

If you’re trying to install a raised bed where sod already exists, you will have a slightly more difficult time. You will need to cut the sod around the perimeter of the garden, and flip it over. This may sound simple, but you will need something with a very sharp edge to slice the edges of the sod and get under it. Once you have turned it all upside down, it is best to add a layer of straw to discourage the grass from growing back up. After the layer of straw, simply add all the soil and steer manure that a normal garden would need.

Planting your plants in your new area shouldn’t pose much difficulty. It is essentially the same process as your usual planting session. Just be sure that the roots don’t extent too far into the original ground level. The whole point of creating the raised bed is to keep the roots out of the soil which saturates easily. Having long roots that extend that far completely destroys the point.

Once you have plants in your new bed, you’ll notice an almost immediate improvement. The added soil facilitates better root development. At the same time, evaporation is prevented and decomposition is discouraged. All of these things added together makes for an ideal environment for almost any plant to grow in. So don’t be intimidated by the thought of adjusting the very topography of your yard. It is a simple process as I’m sure you’ve realized, and the long term results are worth every bit of work.

Not too much in gardening bugs me as much as poor drainage for my plants. A few of the plants we have can handle a water situation but most of them just give up treading water and drown. It’s a learning curve to know which plants are going to lap it up and blossom beautifully and which plants won’t. I tend to be one of those people that reads the instructions when what I think will work doesn’t. It’s all part of learning to be a gardener.

Alright you don’t want to be like me so let me tell you how you can test your ground to see how it handles water. Start by digging a hole about 10 inches to a foot deep and about 8 inches across. Now go get some water and fill that hole to the top. Leave that for about a day and then fill it again. By the way if it still has water in it you have a problem, if not let’s see how much of that water is gone in 8 or 10 hours. If you still have water you do have a drainage problem and your soil will hold too much water for some plants.

We tried a few things to make the soil drain a little better, like making trenches to drain the water away but that didn’t do much of a job as our garden is fairly level and the water still didn’t drain away. Then we tried to create raised planting beds and that was the trick that saved us time, money and plants of course.

We created the raised beds so they were at least 5 to 8 inches deep and using the right combination of compost to existing soil we had a winner and our drainage problem was pretty much under control. The great thing about it is how nice the raised beds look. It makes our garden look kinda professional now and people make nice comments, where before there just wasn’t anything to comment on.

We bought our dream home almost two years ago now, after owning three homes that were just homes, but they all needed a little backyard landscaped design to spruce them up.
