Herb Garden: Dill: It’s Not Just For Pickling

Did you know that dill was used by Hippocrates as an application on burns suffered by soldiers in ancient Rome? Dill is not just used for pickling or as an added herb to certain dishes, but has medicinal qualities as well.

The green dill leaves have a sweet aroma and taste. When dried, the dill seeds are similar in taste to caraway seeds, and have a sweet and citric type flavor but slightly buttery as well. Derived from the Norse word dilla; it means to lull. Thus, this herb is used to induce sleep and is a great insomnia reliever.

The components in dill oil act as protective neutralizers in carcinogens such as: cigarettes smoke, charcoal grill smoke, and trash incinerator smoke. This oil also prevents bacteria growth, much in the same way as garlic. In addition to its aforementioned properties, dill is a very good source of calcium which is important for reducing the bone loss that occurs after menopause and in some conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Crushed dill seeds, when diluted with water, can be used as a nail-strengthening bath. When chewed, dill seeds can be highly effective in curing bad breath. It can also be used to relieve stomach symptoms. Simply chop a little dill and mix it with plain low fat yogurt. Did you also know that one tablespoonful of dill seed contains as much calcium as one-third cup of milk? Also, dill tea is used as a stomach soother, to overcome insomnia, and even to cure hiccups. In its diluted form, it may be used as a remedy for gas in infants.

Dill has been used for both its culinary and medicinal properties for thousands of years. Furthermore, dill is widely used in Scandinavian cuisine due to its light and delicate flavor. It compliments fish dishes; goes well with smoked salmon, cheese, egg dishes, sour cream and yogurt. Dill seeds have a much stronger flavor and in combination with vinegar and spices make a great pickling agent. They are partnered with cucumbers to make dill pickles. Dill seed is a very good source of calcium, dietary fiber, as well as the minerals manganese, iron, and magnesium.

Dill can be planted as seeds in your garden; and you they don’t require much care, which is perfect if you are not considered a gardener. If you prefer to purchase it, you can be sure most supermarkets carry fresh dill. In fact, if you have ever tuned into the food network, you will know what to do when you take it home. Run it under water, clean, wrap in paper towels; put into a zip lock bag and you’re set to use it at any time. Yummo!

Would you just love to grow vegetables, but you don’t have the space? While a big sprawling garden may be the ideal, quality vegetables can be grown even in the absence of a yard. Many people who live in apartments in crowded cities still manage to grow great veggies to enjoy.

When you don’t have a yard to plant in, you can turn to container gardening to grow your fresh fruit and vegetables. It’s easy to find pots and other containers, both large and small that work great for apartment gardens. Plastic gardening containers can be purchased fairly cheaply and work well in most cases. If you’re looking for something more stylish, you can buy or make wooden containers. These keep the soil temperature from fluctuating as much, but require more watering because they’re very porous. If container gardening seems just a little too boring for you, there are plenty of products on the market to make gardens more catchy and cool. One example is the garden sock. This looks like a giant hosiery sock that your can use to plants various vegetables or flowers.

If you’re totally lacking a yard or balcony, you can use more decorative pots or containers. If you place your vegetables correctly in your apartment, they can act as decorative pieces as well as great food. The key for decorating with vegetables is to get creative. Wrapping a vine from a vegetable plant around a post or railing can make a nice accent. Just be sure indoor plants are getting plenty of direct sunlight.

You’re probably still thinking “what kind of vegetables could I possibly grow in such a small space?” While there are certain fruits and veggies that grow in small spaces, like strawberries, the real key is picking the right variety of vegetables to grow. Many vegetables have smaller versions that don’t need as much space as their full size counterparts. When picking plants to grow, look at how much room they need to have and how far apart they need to be.

Hopefully one or more of these tips has gotten your imagination growing. Just remember, instead of concentrating on how your small space limits you, think of the fun and creative things you can do with vegetables in the area you do have.

How to Start a Vegetable Garden

Why should you start a vegetable garden?  While growing your own vegetables may seem like a lot of work, there’s nothing like biting into a nice ripe tomato and thinking “I grew this myself”. Gardening provides a great workout with proven stress relief, along with beautiful and tasty vegetables.  So the real question is “why haven’t you started your vegetable garden already?”

The first thing you need to do when starting a vegetable garden is to find a spot and prepare it.  Most veggies need lots of sun to grow; so pick a spot that gets sun most of the day.  You should then tear up the soil to make it loose.  This way you will be able to plant your vegetables and their roots will be able to grow.  It’s almost impossible for little plants to break through compact soil.  You can then put organic material in your soil by adding compost or manure.  If you don’t have this on hand, you can go pick something up at your local gardening store.

The next thing you need to do is to pick out what plants you want to grow.  Of course pick your family’s favorite vegetables first; you don’t want a bunch of food sitting around that no one wants.  Just make sure that the vegetables you want will grow properly where you live.  You also want to pick varieties you have the time and space to take care of.  It’s no fun to do all that work and come out with half-rate vegetables.

Once you have your garden prepared and you know what you want to grow, plan the actual layout of your garden.  The best way to do this is to get out a sheet of paper and draw your garden.  Some plants can grow pretty close together, while others need to be spread out so they won’t have competition.  Draw where you want to put each crop so you know you have enough room for everything.

Now that you have your spot picked out and you know exactly what to get, it’s time to go to the store and buy your plants or seeds.  Just remember if you’re buying seeds that some will not germinate so you’ll want to buy extra.  Good luck and happy planting!

Marjoram: A “Major” Health Benefit

Native to the Mediterranean region, marjoram grows primarily in Sicily, and one of its cities, Marjoram, is named after it. The residents of Marjoram hold the belief that marjoram had the power to banish sorrow. In addition, marjoram has sacred associations in the Hindu religion and was found to be of considerable use in the middle Ages, especially to preserve and disinfect meat that was less than fresh.

Because marjoram is considered to have the most fragrant essential oil among all herbs, it is widely used in aromatherapy, and also as a warming and soothing message oil to provide relief for muscular ache. Its healing properties include: fighting asthma; headaches; and soothing the stomach and digestive tract. This soothing herbal flavor can be enjoyed as a tea by sprinkling water over a few sprigs of marjoram.

In addition, the leaf of the marjoram has been used to loosen phlegm. It acts as a decongestant and useful in bronchitis, sinusitis and sinus headaches. Used as a tonic for the nervous system, marjoram is believed to be more calming than oregano, as it is used to soothe the nerves, reduce tension and stress; especially environmental. One of the components in marjoram is the flavonoids which have sedation qualities which help to relieve insomnia, tension headaches and migraines.

Promoting healthy digestion and treating simple gastrointestinal disorders, such as loss of appetite, indigestion, nausea and flatulence is another benefit in using marjoram. Much like the herb peppermint, it is said to soothe minor digestive upsets and colic. The flavonoids may also promote healthy arteries and heart by preventing cholesterol buildup and improving blood circulation. It is also thought to help individuals with Alzheimer’s disease.

Containing anti-inflammatory properties, marjoram can be used internally or externally. It alleviates aches and pains and when used externally, aids in the reduction of toothaches, muscular pain, bruises, arthritis, sprains and stiff joints. Used internally, it eases severe stomach cramps, spasms and painful menstruation. Marjoram stimulates perspiration, which also helps to rid the body of toxins through the skin. Moreover, this quality helps in the reduction of fevers, and helps to relieve cold and flu symptoms.

On the culinary side, marjoram makes excellent stuffing for chicken and turkey roasts. It makes an attractive garnish for bean and pea soups, and enhances the flavor of carrot and squash when cooked with it. It also works well with cheese and egg dishes. Marjoram is considered to be one of the rare herbs whose flavor intensifies when dried. It is also used in homemade sausages and meats that are to be cured or smoked. Marjoram also works well in combination with other herbs in spice blends. Marjoram is most definitely a major health benefit.

Thyme: Healthful Benefits Over Time

Just take a look in kitchen cabinet and you’ll probably find a bottle of thyme.  Or, you may have your own herb garden filled with herbs including thyme. Used for centuries, thyme traditionally flavors stews and is mixed in with roasted vegetables. It is a widely used and a popular herb. It is easy to obtain and relatively inexpensive to purchase fresh or dried. This wonderfully fragrant herb has many uses in the kitchen, but for purposes of this article, the health benefits of thyme will be discussed.

Derived from the Greek word meaning courage, it is said that Roman soldiers took thyme baths to energize and prepare for battle. Conversely, women would sew sprigs of thyme into the vests of their knights as good luck tokens. More notably, the Egyptians used it as embalming fluid. It stands to reason since thyme is known to be both a preservative and an antifungal agent. Thyme also has antiseptic qualities. Surely one time or another it has been used as a tea bag and placed on the eyes to cure sties, and aid in treating pink eye or conjunctivitis.

Externally applied, thyme has been used to help treat tumors, dental decay, plaque, thrush, tonsillitis, halitosis, deep wounds, and bruises. It is said to be effective for destroying skin parasites, such as scabies, crabs and lice.  Used internally, thyme properties work to rid parasites in the gastrointestinal tract. If you happen to have a herbal garden, thyme can be crushed and used to clean cuts and scrapes, offering an immediate antiseptic remedy. Studies have shown that the innate qualities in thyme destroy many forms of fungus and bacteria. As a tea, thyme has beneficial results in gastrointestinal problems. In addition, it can relieve both hangovers and act as a digestive aid or tonic.

Especially helpful to women, because of its antispasmodic qualities, it offers relief from cramps associated with monthly periods. This herb is said to be effective in the treatment of chest infections for which phlegm can be expelled from the lungs.  It has been used effectively for sore throats, coughs, croup, whooping cough, acute bronchitis, laryngitis and asthma.

Thyme oil has been used to treat topical fungal infections and is also used in toothpastes to prevent gingivitis.  It is also considered an excellent expectorant.  It is said to relax the muscle of the stomach, relieving a variety of stomach upsets. Thyme is also used to alleviate chronic gastritis, lack of appetite, indigestion, irritable bowel and colic. In addition, it is also used to ease convulsions, epilepsy, menstrual cramps and spasm-induced coughing and diarrhea. As a tonic, thyme is believed to stimulate the nervous system, alleviating such nervous disorders as depression, nightmares, nervous exhaustion, insomnia and melancholy.

With all that said, thyme is one efficient and effective herb!

Controlling Pests in Your Organic Garden

Nothing beautifies your garden like a well cared for lawn, but pests such as insects and other wildlife can ruin the garden you’ve worked so hard to maintain.  There are many chemical treatments to take care of these pests, but they can be harmful to the environment, your pets, and your children.   If you’re sick of having your garden eaten alive, I have good news.  There are several options available for natural pest control.

Many garden care stores offer natural pest control products.  Most of these are similar to chemical options; they are simply made from natural ingredients.  While these are a good alternative, you should do a little research before you buy.  Just because something is natural, doesn’t mean it’s safe.  It also may not work as well as chemical pesticides.  Check online to find other people who have used the products.

Another option for natural pest control is to add beneficial insects to your garden.  They get rid of harmful insects without adding any chemicals (even natural ones) to your garden.  While this is generally better for the environment, you should be sure not to throw your ecosystem out of whack.  Adding too many insects or adding ones that are not already in your area can cause harm to your natural ecosystem.  Research any animal before adding it to your garden.

Another natural option you may not have heard of is companion planting.  This technique has been used by farmers for many years as a natural way to enhance the soil and protect against pests.  Companion planting is when you put two different plants together in the same area.  If you pick the correct plants and care for them properly, they will benefit each other.  In vegetable gardens, you can plant crops such as squash, which have vines that many larger animals don’t want to work their way through.  For traditional gardens, there are plants that naturally repel certain kinds of pests, usually through smell.

Hopefully these options will be helpful to you.  Good luck with your organic garden.

How to Attract Birds to Your Garden

What better way to beautify your garden than to fill it with birds?  Birds add color and life to any garden.  If you’re wondering why other’s gardens have birds galore and yours is lacking residents, follow these tips and you’ll have a feather filled garden in no time.

The first thing birds need to be happy is shelter, which can be provided with birdhouses.  Birdhouses can be purchased from many different stores, but it’s cheaper and often more effective to build your own.  You may notice at stores that there are many different kinds of houses available.  What type of birdhouse you need depends on what kind of bird you want to attract.  Just remember, to try to attract local birds.  If you haven’t seen a kind of bird in your neighborhood, you shouldn’t count on seeing it in your garden.  Try to place the houses in areas that are more hidden where birds will feel safe and comfortable.

Providing adequate shelter for birds also means giving them appropriate nesting materials; this can help them turn their bird house into a comfortable home.  Birds usually use hard materials for structure and soft materials to fill in the gaps.  Good nesting materials include string, hair, twigs, moss, fabric, and even dryer lint.  Basically, they’ll use anything long and skinny, or soft materials that can be pulled that way.

Another essential factor for attracting birds to your garden is water.  Birdbaths are the best option because they are shallow for swimming and have edges for drinking.  If you have a large garden, you can add more than one bird bath.  If you do, try to have them in sunny and shady places so birds can choose.  Along with attracting feathered friends, bird baths also add a decorative touch.

Another important factor for attracting birds is food.  While water and housing may entice your birds to stay, they’ll probably find your garden in their search for something to eat.  You should provide birds with a variety of different seeds, fruits, and nuts.  They need a balanced diet just like you do.  One thing you might want to consider is whether or not to feed cooked food.  While it’s better for birds to have fresh food, this may also cause unwanted plants in your garden and surrounding areas.  Just like houses, feeders should be placed in areas where a bird feels comfortable and safe from predators.  Birds also like to feast on insects, so make sure your garden has good rich soil to promote creepy crawly critters to stay too.

When trying to attract birds to your garden patience is the key.  Even if you provide all the essentials for birds, they still may not show up right away.  You should give them time to find your garden and then make a habit of visiting.  Even if you don’t get birds right away, keep trying.  They’re sure to show up in no time.

Rosemary: What’s In A Name

Derived from the Latin meaning sea dew, rosemary is a small evergreen shrub. With needle-like leaves that are dark green, rosemary is notable for its use in a variety of dishes.  The leaf of the plant, however, is used for medicinal purposes.  Here are some healthful advantages in using this herb.

Rosemary may improve memory, relieve muscle pain, and stimulate the nervous system.  It is used for digestive problems, circulatory problems, pain, neuralgia, spasms, wounds, eczema, rheumatism, and depression. As an antispasmodic herb, it is used to increase urine production. Another fact about rosemary is that used in combination with St. John’s Wort and ginkgo biloba, it may improve disorders associated with brain inflammation.

In addition to calming the nerves, rosemary relaxes muscles, eases pain, and reduces tension and anxiety throughout the body.  Thus it has been very helpful in treating headaches, migraines caused by stress, depression, nervous exhaustion and apathy. As a circulatory and nerve stimulant, rosemary activates the flow of digestive juices.  While traditionally rosemary has been used by herbalists to improve memory, it also aids in the treatment of headaches and poor circulation, and embodies an effective stimulant producing increased memory function. The components in rosemary enhance a stronger blood flow. It not only improves brain function, as mentioned earlier, but has also been used to treat disorders characterized by circulatory weakness such as: high and low blood pressure; varicose veins; bruises; and sprains.

Rosemary is said to be fight bad cells and has shown anti-cancer and anti-tumor activity.  Because it possesses strong antioxidants, it may prevent cancer-causing chemicals invading cells, most notably in the liver and bronchial areas. Described as potent enough to kill bacterial infection, it should be stated it cannot totally expunge bacteria from the digestive tract. However, rosemary has been shown to treat toxic shock syndrome.

Because rosemary stimulates and improves circulation throughout the body, it increases the blood supply to the skin, which is thought to help restore a youthful glow. Another benefit is if your hair is dull from product buildup, you can try a rosemary tea rinse. Rosemary cleans hair follicles and promotes hair growth. Use it once a week to obtain a thick, clean hair and scalp.

Along with sage and thyme, rosemary is yet another culinary herb which also embodies medicinal benefits.  If you have an herbal garden, or wish to plant one, you may prefer to begin with adding these three herbs as your starting point.  At least you will be off to a healthy start!

Garlic: It Does More Than Ward Off Evil

Certainly, if you have been watching the Food Channel, you no doubt have seen chefs use garlic in abundance. Let’s explore garlic; its history and health benefits.

Garlic is a member of the lily family and, as a dried root, is native to central Asia. However it should be interesting to note it was widely used more than 5000 years ago. This herb was fed to workers who built the Great Pyramid at Giza. In addition, Greek athletes ate it to build their strength. In the United States, it was first cultivated in New Orleans by French settlers and, subsequently, missionaries brought it to California where it is grown today. In addition, garlic cloves have been used for thousands of years and their use has been recorded in ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, China, Japan, India, Russia and Europe. Known as Russian penicillin, garlic has been used to treat ear infections, cholera and typhus. As a natural antibiotic, garlic was used during both world wars as a disinfectant.

What are the health benefits of garlic?

Not only does it strengthens the immune system; helps prevent heart disease by reducing high blood pressure and lowering cholesterol; fights infections; digestive aid; alleviates gas, but is an anti-inflammatory herb as well. Studies have shown garlic can suppress the growth of tumors, and is a potent antioxidant good for cardiovascular conditions. It is an antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, lowers high blood pressure, and lowers cholesterol and fat in the bloodstream. It is also generally regarded as a preventive measure for colds, flu and other infectious diseases.  Its antibacterial properties help to fight infections, its cancer-inhibiting properties help to prevent cancer, and its anticoagulant properties help contribute to good cardiovascular health. It also works as a digestive aid and relieves gas.

At least nine studies show that garlic decreases the incidence of cancer, especially cancers of the gastrointestinal tract among those who consume it regularly. Garlic has also been used to treat for intestinal worms and other intestinal parasites. Today, garlic cloves are being used for infections, specifically chest infections, digestive disorders, and thrush. Additionally, the allicin in fresh garlic is said to aid in lowering blood sugar levels. Allicin is produced when garlic is finely chopped or crushed. The finer the chopping and the more intensive the crushing, the more Allicin is generated and the stronger the medicinal effect.

While there is a myth that one can ward off evil spirits by wearing garlic around one’s neck or hanging it in windows, you can be assured that it is more useful when consumed. Fresh garlic bulbs are preferred. Next time you visit your local supermarket, pick up two or three cloves and keep them on hand. While it may have a pungent odor, roasting a garlic bulb will afford a sweet and savory taste.

In a world consumed with diseases such as Malaria, West Nile virus and other disturbing medical concerns in regards to mosquito bites, the idea of an ultrasonic pest control device was exciting. Imagine being able to just plug in a small device and be rid of these pests and concerns.

How The Ultrasonic Pest Control Device Provides Protection

The ultrasonic pest control device operates using the high frequency; short wavelength sound waves to discourage mosquitoes from flying in a specific area. Therefore, if you were to own a pest control device that was ultrasonic, you need only be in the area of coverage that the device offered to be free from these annoying pests and the concern for germ contamination. The ultrasonic pest control uses a frequency that is too high for the human eardrum to process and is therefore undetectable to humans. It is however possible for many household pets to detect.

Insects use the special hairs on their antennae, called sensilla, to detect sound waves. The claim is that the sound wave detected from the ultrasonic pest control device is placed at such a level as to repel the insects and therefore rid the vicinity of the pest. There are many different ultrasonic pest control device promoters that insist their machine replicates the sound of a bat, therefore driving the pests away from their believed predator.

Governmental Tests Prove Ultrasonic Pest Control Promise Do Not Hold True

Recently, the United States Environmental Protection Agency participated in a two-year study, involving nearly every type of electronic pest control device on the market to determine the reality of their pest control claims. They chose an area known for its high mosquito population, the area around Chesapeake Bay, and performed actual tests with each product. It was their finding that not one of these electronic pest control devices, including the ultrasonic versions, provided any noticeable relief from the pests. In addition, supporting research at other universities across the United States supported the EPA’s findings. Due to these test results, the United States Postal Service and the EPA are pursuing fraudulent charges with ultrasonic pest control makers for making the inaccurate scientific claims for their products.

While these items continue to be sold, with marketing adjustments to fall within the legal guidelines, it is important as a consumer to be aware of exactly what you are getting for your money. Scientific studies do not support the claims made by the ultrasonic pest control devices, so it might be wise to research all of your option prior to placing an order.

Herb Garden: Sage: A Wise and Useful Herb

Herbs: basil, scallion

Image via Wikipedia

You may not realize it, but you are using sage every day.  It is the ingredient in deodorant products!  What is sage? What are other health benefits of sage? Here are some answers.

Sage is a plant with leaves which leave a lasting impression.  Surely you have seen food TV shows extolling the virtues and the exquisite aroma of sage.  Well, it happens to be true.  Used mostly in cuisine, sage does have medicinal qualities. It has been used to aid in swelling; sprains; ulcers, and bleeding.  Utilized in tea, sage helps with sore throats and coughs. Sage has been promoted by herbalists in the treatment of rheumatism, menstrual bleeding, improving the nervous system, and honing one’s senses.  Used for thousands of years, this is considered to be one effective herb.

Medicinally, sage treats inflammation of the mouth and gums.  Studies also reveal that the ingredient in sage oil may act as antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral treatments. Most notably, however, sage does reduce perspiration. Thus, its efficacy has been utilized in most deodorants.  Known to have compounds which help kill bacteria, sage can function in the treatment of gingivitis; canker sores; bleeding gums; tonsillitis and, laryngitis. Recommendations to soothe sore throats and laryngitis include gargling with sage by boiling it in water; strain after ten minutes, and let it become tepid. Tea sage can also be used as a mouthwash. To make sage tea, use one to two teaspoons of dried leaves per cup of boiling water; steep for ten minutes; then strain.

Sage also increased brain function. A combination of sage, rosemary and ginkgo biloba may also prevent or slow down the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. Sage has long been used to treat gastrointestinal disorders.  It relaxes muscle spasms in the digestive tract, and has been used in the treatment of indigestion.  It also reduces blood sugar levels in individuals who have diabetes.

Although sage is available in liquid form, you can easily grow it in your herbal garden.
Because it is a perennial, you will have the luxury of using this plant’s medicinal properties year after year. Very few side effects have been reported from the consumption of sage leaves; however, sage should be used in medicinal amounts only in consultation with your doctor. Let your doctor know if you experience any unpleasant effects or if the symptoms for which the herb is being used do not improve significantly in two weeks.

For culinary benefits, use sage to stuff chicken and turkey. Sage also pairs well with cheese. Freshly chopped sage complements potato dishes as well as split-pea and bean soups, and should be added near the end of cooking so as not to give too strong a taste.
