The Benefits of Gardening With Kids

Potato plant. To ensure continuing worldwide a...Image via Wikipedia

It really saddens me to see how people mistreat nature. It’s not any new but years ago we were not as informed but today there is just no good excuse.

What can we do about this lack of respect for our planet?  Well I have it figured out. We don’t have to look any further than our children.

I grew up on a farm and we grew our own food, meat, vegetables and fruit. I was involved as part of the family. Today I love to see the children’s involvement with environment-friendly activities.

One such nature-loving activity that children could easily get their hands on is gardening. Our son was started as soon as he was able to walk with falling on his face every few steps.

Why should you consider gardening for your children?

Here are a few benefits that gardening could provide your children with:

1.  Science – In planting, children are indirectly taught the wonders of science like the plant’s life cycle and how human’s intervention can break or make the environment.  They can have a first hand experience on the miracle of life through a seed.  This would definitely be a new and enjoyable experience for the kids.

I learned that if I didn’t pull out all the weeds in our garden there would be less food for me because the weeds need food and would steal it from the vegetables. I never did like eating dandelions so I would pull them out.

2.  Life – I remember getting so excited once I saw the dirt in our garden give way to little shots from all that we planted.

Watching a kernel of corn turn into a plant and then give us back more corn was awesome.

In time, kids will learn to love their plants and appreciate the life in them. I will admit that I didn’t think I would love gardening in later years as it just seemed like too much work when I was a kid. I would much rather run around and waste energy that way rather on my knees weeding the garden, but I didn’t mind pulling things out that I could eat, like radishes and carrots.

I think making gardening a life lesson is important so that the kids don’t just think you’re making them work. Let gardening simulate their little minds and show them how caring for something, like a plant can help you in life.  All I got was if you don’t work you don’t eat, plain and simple.

3.  Relaxation – Studies have shown that gardening can reduce stress because of its calming effect. This is applicable to any age group.  More so, it stimulates all the five senses.  Believe it or not, gardening may be used as therapy to children who have been abused or those who are members of broken homes.  It helps build one’s self-esteem when taught correctly.

4.  Quality Time with the Family – As a parent you can come home from a stressful day at work and a simple walk through your garden can lower your stress level in just minutes.

Kids are the same, they build stress through their days at school and need an outlet that is healthy and productive. Gardening does this but only if it’s made to be fun and rewarding.

Take the time to talk with your kids while gardening but make sure it’s never discipline. Don’t take the love of gardening and turn it into a task. It took me a lot of years to get over that aspect of gardening. It was always a chore as a kid and I didn’t get a lot of joy out of it.

Let kids become aware of their environment’s needs. And one way to jumpstart that environmental education may be through gardening.  Make it something they want to do all through life and maybe their lives will be less stressful and our world will be one big garden.

101 Tips for Growing and Enjoying Your Own Great Rose GardenI have always loved roses but I have found that growing a beautiful rose garden isn’t always an easy thing to do. I spent for a long time just wishing I could grow roses then I found this an ebook with 101 tips for growing your own rose garden . Now I can have great looking and healthy roses, just like our neighbours.

More than 25 years ago I was an employee of Sears and sold roses through their garden department. I loved that job but then computers became popular and my life changed, but that’s a story for another day.

Selling roses is how I met Patricia, who would later become our lawyer. She and her father would come in all the time and buy roses and more roses.

Now we have a home with a property big enough to enjoy some rose gardening so I am learning what I need to know so that we can have some beautiful roses as part of our flower garden.

Not everyone is comfortable growing their own roses so they don’t but this little ebook has the answers and tips that will give you the confidence to plant your own roses, care for them correctly, pruning included and even how to cut them for your own bouquet and arrangements.

Knowing how to fertilize, water and prevent diseases will give you the confidence you have lacked in the past. If this sounds like I am talking to myself well I am. We didn’t have any confidence even though I work in a garden center. They never taught me how to grow them, just to sell them.

If you have an interest in growing your own rose garden then you need to read 101 Tips for Growing and Enjoying Your Own Great Rose Garden.

Who doesn’t like the taste of fresh vegetables right from your garden or even from a friend’s garden if they give you gifts. We have a few friend that garden and just yesterday one of those friends gave us a little party for the taste buds in a basket. Mmmm-mm Good.

She even gave us an eggplant. You will have to excuse me but I have never had a fondness for egg plant but it was a gift and it was fresh from the garden. I decided to use some of the veggies, grill them a bit for some extra flavour and then make a nice fresh soup.

I like to eat zucchini raw on a plate or in salads but grilled zucchini just rocks. The flavour that slight charring does puts in so much flavour.

I also put the tomatoes on the grill as well and then once they had that tasty grill marks but not quite cooked, I popped them into the soup.

It’s been a long time since I have had a bowl of vegetable soup that was so fresh and refreshing.

BTW: Dear, if you happen to read this before you get home tonight I saved you a bowl, I think.

Barbeque Maintenance Tips

A typical propane barbecue grill in a backyard...Image via Wikipedia

When purchasing your barbeque grill, think of it as an investment rather then just another item for your outdoor entertainment. You should expect this item to become a large part of your outdoor activities for many years to come. But like any other investments, proper maintenance and care is needed to ensure that your barbeque grill will work for you for many years to come.  While some maintenance and cleaning is specific to the type of barbeque grill your own (gas, electric, charcoal or smoke barbecue grill), the majority of maintenance that should be carried on does not change from grill to grill.

Step 1- Gathering The Necessary Items

You will need some common household items on hand when it comes time to clean your barbeque grill.

  • Brass wire grill brush
  • Steel wool pads, preferably that contains soap already.
  • Mild dish soap
  • Sponge or dishcloth
  • Spray cooking oil
  • Dry baking soda
  • Aluminum foil

Step 2- Brushing Your Grill Off

The first thing that should always be done to your grill is a routine brushing. Using your brass wire grill brush (or other brush suitable to your type of grill) you should brush off all the surfaces. By routinely brushing your barbeque grill, you will prevent any type of buildup. If buildup from food is left to long, it can become increasingly difficult to remove.

Step 3- Spray Cooking Oil

Once you are sure that your grill is free of all buildup and debris, and that your grill is completely cooled off, you will want to spray it down with a light layer of cooking oil. Spraying it down with cooking oil will prevent your barbeque grill from rusting. It is especially important to make sure your barbeque grill is completely cold, as spraying cooking oil on a hot surface may cause the oil to heat up and ignite, which could be potentially dangerous to you and your barbeque grill.

Step 4- Use Baking Soda and Aluminum Foil on Your Grill

Baking soda is a very nice cleaning and polishing agent. Once you have removed any extra debris and buildup, lightly scrubbing your barbeque grill with baking soda will give it that extra shine, similar to the day that you brought it home from the store. This can also be used on handles and knobs to remove any extra buildup that cannot be taken off with a wire brush.

Aluminum foil can also be used to keep your grill looking nice. Gently rub the aluminum foil on your grill, and you will notice that it removes grim and buildup.

Step 5- Clean Your Racks

The racks in your grill are especially important as this is where the food touches when it is cooking. You will have to use the wire brush to remove as much buildup as possible. Once you remove as much as possible, start washing the racks with dish soap. If the racks are really dirty, you may also want to use the steel wool pads. Be sure to completely rinse off all soap and residue before cooking on these racks again.

Step 6- Preventing Problems

The majority of problems that arise from barbeque grills comes from lack of cleaning and maintenance. That means if you notice something does not seem quite right with your barbeque grill, chances are it can be fixed with just a simple cleaning. Even if you clean it, and still find that it is having problems, at least you saved yourself the potential embarrassment of taking it to a professional only to find out all it needed was to be cleaned.

Finally, one method of preventing problems with your barbeque grill is protecting it from the outdoors. Covers are available for grills in all shapes and sizes, so chances are, you will find one that fits your grill. If you have a cover for your barbeque grill, then all you will ever need to do is do the regular maintenance listed above.

Full and cross-section of a ripe supermarket t...Image via Wikipedia

Nearly every spring there are people that have the notion of planting a vegetable garden to have fresh produce through the summer and fall. In addition to the fresh taste that homegrown vegetables provide, they can also provide a savings to the family food budget as well as alleviate some of the concerns of what might be used to help the crops grow.

Additionally, having their own vegetable garden allows people to grow the types and quantity of vegetables they will use with the only limits being the size of the space they have available.

Most products will require a sunny location in which to grow and even those without space in their yard for a large vegetable garden can grow their own in small patio gardens or in containers. The larger the space available for a vegetable garden obviously will result in a better harvest at the end of the season but will also require a larger investment in sweat equity.

In order to have a productive vegetable garden, planning of the types of crops needs to be conducted way ahead of time as well as soil preparation and knowing what plants can be started from seed in your basement and what plants you are better off buying as starter plants from a local greenhouse.

Choosing The Crops That Will Be Used

When putting in a vegetable garden only the crops that will be used should be planted. If a person is not that fond of tomatoes for instance, they probably should not bother with them unless they plan to give them away. Remember too, that some of the crops will grow without need for continual attention while others may require almost constant care to insure a bumper crop.

There is not secret that if you are going to plant and care for a vegetable garden you have to dig it, and soil preparation is probably the most time consuming and labor-intensive part of having your own vegetable garden in the backyard. Most plants grow will in loose soil or lightly compacted ground, but even soil that contains a lot of clay can produce a good crop if the soil is worked with things such as vermiculate or sand to provide a growing medium conducive to developing a good root structure.

Many of the items grown in a vegetable garden can be harvested and frozen or canned for use throughout the winter, but some do not lend themselves to be saved for long. Planting only what you will use of those plants will save you a lot of energy that can be used on the ones that you can pack away for the winter.

Backyard BBQ – Gas Barbeque Grills

Shop GrillsDirect.com Today!I think the first time an animal was cooked hole by getting caught in a fire was when man first became addicted to BBQs. Of course they didn’t call it BBQ back then, mostly they just called it Mmmmmm.

Cave dwellers didn’t take long to realize that meat tasted a whole lot better when it was cooked. Since then barbequing has become a Canadian as well as an American tradition. The backyard for most people would not be complete with some type of BBQ, Grill or Firepit. I know our backyard seemed to have something missing until we got our new BBQ, as the last one we had remained with the family that bought our house.

I walk a lot and check out other people’s yards because I am a gardener and always looking for new ideas. During my walks and garden viewing I see that about 80 – 90% of those yards have BBQs. I also see many apartment buildings with balconies that have BBQ on them as well.

The reasons why so many have BBQs, well I think it must have something to do with how tasty the BBQ makes our food.

We went with a propane BBQ that was on sale for less than $100.00 and it even came with a cover to keep it looking new and protected from the weather. We have had it for two years now and it lights at the push of a button, has two burners but we usually only need the one burner for my wife and I. However our son loves BBQ and if he gets a wiff of it he’s here for dinner, again.

We have friends and neighbours that use their BBQs all year round, even through the winter. I must say that I am not quit that fanatical but still the taste so we now have an indoor grill that puts out some pretty tasty burgers and steaks.

I do find it easier to grill veggies from our backyard garden on the indoor grill as they don’t fall through the grate. Next time we buy a BBQ it will include a few bells and whistles, like a grilling area and maybe an extra burner for sauces.

Rain Rain Go Away My Poor Backyard Garden

Distant Rain.Image via Wikipedia

I would say that August 2008 has to be a record in my mind. I can’t remember, in my 55 years, getting so much rain in August. Usually August is a very dry month and we are asked to be careful with our water usage.

Friends were over last night and they have had the last two weeks off. Unfortunately for them they had rain every single day. But nearing the end of their vacation they decided they were taking a day and heading out on their motorcycle rain or shine. Well they heading it and after just ten minutes on the road the rain stopped and they had a great day on the road.

Maybe they should have done that sooner and they would have had a nicer vacation.

My garden should have done better with all this rain but between the buckets of rain and the high winds we don’t have to much left to harvest. It bummed me out for a bit but this being our first year as backyard gardeners I’ll choose to learn from the experience and stake things better next year.

I have to admit that I waited to bit too long before planting so I really think if my little backyard garden was rooted a little longer they would have endured through the rain.

The rest of our yard looks very lush and healthy.

My office has a window that looks out over our backyard and as August moved on and the rains continued I actually expected to see an arc float by.

On a happier note our wild Atlantic salmon numbers are increasing as the rain has raised the rivers so much the salmon are moving up the rivers to spawn in record numbers again. Now that makes me feel a lot better as I am hooked on fly fishing here in New Brunswick.

Collingwood Children's Farm garden plots and i...Image via Wikipedia

Getting the most life out of a garden area by planting a fall vegetable garden with products that are more conducive to growing in cooler weather can extend the growing season in most areas of the country. Depending on where you live will determine the right time of the year to put in a fall vegetable garden and the types of plants or seeds being used will also determine the amount of preparation that will be needed.

Many cool crops such as carrots, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts are more amenable to maturing in cooler weather and when you can plant from seed or will need transplantable plants will also hinge on the type of soil in which the plants are growing. Typically, August 1 is about the time for putting in a fall vegetable garden, especially in the middle of the country, with those living further north adjusting the planting schedule according to their location.

Ground preparation can begin as soon as the summer harvest is ending, and any remnants of the plants and weeds will need to be removed before planting the fall vegetable garden crops. Consider that most of the plants will have a 60 to 80 day maturity period, the appropriate time for planting can be adjusted. Crops that do well in the hot summer months probably will not survive a cool climate harvest, and with most of them, the first frost will end their life.

Planning And Diligence Required For Success

With a fall vegetable garden, planning which plants will be used can make life easier on the gardener. While many may grow well from seeds, in the late summer the soil can form a crust on the surface that will make it nearly impossible for tender plants to break through. Vegetables such as lettuce and cabbage may experience better growth if planted from plants that are four to six weeks old.

When planting from seeds, they need to be placed at least two inches deep as the moisture content in the soil is generally less than in the spring. Additionally, many seeds do not fare well in soil above 85-degrees and when planting under these conditions covering the soil with burlap or newspaper may help keep the dirt cooler and improve the odds of a fall vegetable garden success.

During the growth of a fall vegetable garden, the plants will require about one inch of water every week, including rain. In dry climates, the gardener can use a rain gauge while watering to make sure they provide the right amount of water for a good harvest from their fall vegetable garden.

How Important is Your Home Insurance?

Home insurance is one of those things that never really comes to mind after you have it, until you need it.

On the advice of a good friend and his wife we went with a local agent working for a national insurance company. With 20/20 hindsite I have to say it wasn’t my brightest move. Trusting a friend is okay for a finding new restaurants or maybe a good bottle of wine, but unless they have had to make claims with that insurance company I think research would be a better choice.

Of course we gave that insurance company our money year after year without complaint as we at that time had never needed to make a claim. Why one needs to research the insurance company they go with became all to clear the moment we made a claim.

We finally got our money and you can be sure they dropped us like a hot potato coming up with as lame an excuse as they could. Today I would never give out the name of an insurance company, instead I encourage friends to research the Home Insurance companies they are interested in.

We now have home insurance with a company that has an unblemished track record yet we still would not advice others to go with them unless they do the research like we did and agree with our results.

It’s bad enough when something like, flooding, fire or theft causes problems but their is also an emotional issue and who wants to deal with a company that doesn’t want to pay you when you feel like your world is coming apart.

Take a few minutes, check out Home Insurance where you can compare companies to find the best home insurance for the money.

How to Do Indoor Gardening?

Yellow & BlueImage by debcll via Flickr

I was indoor gardening long before we had the space for backyard gardening.

Plants are just as popular as furniture when one is deciding on furniture and soft furnishings.
Aside from the aesthetic value plants provide your home with, there are also health benefits – grade school science class tells us that plants cleanse the air through utilizing the carbon dioxide and producing more oxygen. Here is some important information on how to care for your indoor plants to gain the optimum health and aesthetic benefits.

Lighting

Most indoor plants need good lighting. You can provide this through natural lighting in the room of your choice or there must be electric lighting. Darker leaved plants usually don’t need as much light as others.

Here are the varieties of plants (usually those that only require medium to low light) that are known to be suitable for indoor gardening:

a. Philodendrons
b. Boston ferns
c. African violets
d. Cyclamens
e. Creeping Fig

Watering

A common mistake most people make in indoor gardening is they tend to over-water the plants, which may lead to rotting roots.  Make sure to research the type of plant you have, because each kind of plant varies on their watering needs.

Potting

Choose good quality and attractive container for your indoor plants. Make sure that the pot is clean before placing your new plant into it to prevent infection and to encourage healthy growth.

Humidity

In indoor gardening, humidity is a big issue.  The amount of moisture in the air has effect on the growth of the plants. During mornings, you could spray the plants with water for their much-needed moisture. Make sure the leaves don’t get covered in dust.

Fertilization

Just like watering, fertilizing depends on the type of plant.  If you have managed to supply your indoor garden with the right amount of light, water and humidity, fertilization may not need much attention. A good indoor fertilizer can be bought from most home depot or hardware stores. Orchids need the special fertilizer available.

Gardening Plants

Rudbeckia hirta flowerheadImage via Wikipedia

When it comes to gardening plants, there are too many to name.  Gardening plants can refer to flowers, shrubs, herbs, vegatables, fruits, and many more.  There are also gardening plants that are in season at different times of the year, some in fall and winter, others in spring and summer. Whatever type of gardening you decide is your forte; there are plenty of gardening plants available to suit your preferences.

If you want gardening plants that you can actually use instead of just look at, vegatable gardening, herb gardening, and fruits are all very satisfying.  Edible plants add an excitement to gardening because of the produce available at harvest time.  The main vegetables grown in smaller, home gardens as well as larger ones include corn, peas, cucumbers, potatoes, squash, peppers, onions, carrots, spinach, lettuce, and beets.  Popular fruits are pears, plums, tomatoes, blueberries, apricots, cherries, and strawberries.  Herbs are used for their wonderful fragrances, to spice up a salad, and in cooking.  Herbs that are often home grown include thyme, sage, dill, mint, lavender, and chives.

It is fairly easy to have a colorful garden in the spring and summer months, but it is a whole different ball-game during the cold, winter months.  Even though it is difficult, with planning and a little more care you can have a colorful garden year round.  One gardening plant that thrives in the fall and winter months is the Rudbeckia, a beautiful yellow perennial.  Others include the Christmas rose, the Japanese Anemone, and Cosmos.

When you think of flowers you automatically think of a spring garden full of many different, beautiful colors.  Spring and summer gardening plants are some of the prettiest things on earth and give inspiration to all who grow them.  Some of the most grown spring plants are tulips, daffodils, and violets.  Favorites of the warmer months of summer are lilies, dahlias, and roses.

When gardening, many people will opt for decorative grasses or shrubs.  Monkey grass is an all time favorite, especially for a sidewalk.  These will gardening plants can be for looks, can act as a border or fence, and can be used for privacy.  Shrubs are easy to take care of and add a defining look to any yard or garden.

There are so many different kinds of gardening plants available.  Many gardening plants actually have a purpose and can be used, whereas many of them are just for looks.  The kind of gardening plant you choose to have in your garden is completely up to you, but remember, no matter what kind it is, it will require some maintenance and without proper care you will end up with a garden full of just dirt.
