Unlike growing in your home, a greenhouse has significantly better light and watering setups. Not many homeowners have the space to have high pressure sodium lights or LED grow light panels installed for their vegetables, or the option of running irrigation systems through their guestrooms!

When you have a greenhouse, these systems can be placed optimally for your plants, making things easier for you as a gardener. This is especially important for hydroponic gardeners, since the water and light are far more important than in soil gardening – a soil garden is typically much better at being self-regulated in this regard.

One way to helping plants thrive is to use a good soil which can provide good nutrient delivery for the plants. Since my wife and I have started gardening both flowers and vegetables we just have to know where the local nurseries and garden centres are.

We also travel and if I know we are fairly close to a nursery I like to stop and see what they have our local nursery doesn’t have.

Our backyard is still pretty sparse but we are making it our own and that’s going to take a few more years.

Once spring finally arrives I plan to get to each of the garden centers and nurseries listed above. What a great way to spend a day or two.

If I get it figured out I will also link each nursery to a Google Map page to make it easier to find them. Nothing worse than wasting time driving around because I don’t like to ask for directions. My wife added that comment.

As far back as I can remember I’ve loved gardening. When I was a small child I would spend countless hours in the dirt with my grandmother planting everything from cucumbers to corn. Every summer I would spend all my days on my grandparents farm. I was really given two choices, work in the garden or study my spelling. Of course it was an easy choice since I loved gardening and hated school.

That’s how I came to be where I am, taking whatever time I can to be with my plants, but now it’s at my own house instead of the farm. This year I decided that I’d mix up the vegetables I planted. I stared with corn, then cauliflower, and finally cucumber. It was simple to do. The plants needed water almost every day because the sun was shining and it was always hot and dry. I needed to get my man to chop down an intruding tree that was depriving my garden of the sun. Really it was a lot of work for a small amount of veggies.

Weeding is my least favorite part of gardening. This summer is was a lot better because I went out and decided to buy garden shovels. Being down on my knees all summer is just unpleasant. Next year now that I think of it I might hire someone to come in every once in while and do it for me. Now all I have left to do is convince the hubby, he’s cheap.

The right tools for the job make all the difference, and that’s why I don’t know why more people don’t buy gardening tools. If it were up to me there would be no room left in my garage because I’d have a tool for every little thing. Gardening is geat, but having the proper tools for the job makes it way more fun. Next time you are thinking of getting down and dirty, grab the right tool for the job and have fun!

Fascinating gardens are a true art form and if you are wanting one that will catch the attention of others, you may consider adding a few of the best carnivorous plants available. From the common Venus Flytrap to the Cobra plant, these exotics serve several purposes. Both these plants consume insects and can be of benefit to any garden in that way and in addition, they are a great conversational piece. While the benefit is strictly related to the size and type of carnivorous plants that you own, these plants can provide a small level of relief while providing entertainment to adults and children alike.

There are five different types of carnivorous plants. The most common type, is the Venus Flytrap found in cultivated varieties of the Dionaea muscipula family. Snap traps rely on a mouth that close in around its pray, where the plant will eat whatever it catches.

Once an insect is captured, the plant closes its trap tightly around the meal and bathes it in digestive juices that dissolve the insect’s soft, inner parts. Digestion takes five to 12 days, after which the trap reopens, then the insect’s exoskeleton blows away in the wind or is washed away by rain.

These plants range from colorful to bland, and do not have moving parts like their snap trap counterparts.

Sundew plants of the Venus Flytrap family are amongst the most interesting to watch. They are covered with dense, gland-tipped hairs and several tiny midge flies are stuck to the sticky hairs, which causes the insect to be enzymatically digested and absorbed by the plant. These carnivorous plants should be treated with caution in the home, as the secretions can cause agitation to the skin.

The only carnivorous plant with a true “trapdoor” is the remarkable bladderwort. These plants function through the osmosis of water to create a suction within the body of the plant. Once an insect or aquatic species has been trapped within, escape is difficult. Unlike many carnivorous plant species, these are more commonly found underwater than above ground.

Another favorite carnivorous plant are the lobster-pot traps, and they come with a chamber that is easy to enter, and whose exit is either difficult to find or obstructed by inward-pointing bristles.

Corkscrew plants are interesting, in that, the inside of the plant mouth is filled with downward pointing obstructions, used to prevent it’s prey from escaping it’s grasp.

If you do not wish to have a true carnivorous plant in your garden, but would like something with similar characteristics, there are several related species you may want to consider. These plants include the Brocchinia Roridula and members of the Martyniaceae species. They are not considered to be in the same classification as true carnivorous plants because they do not, attract, kill and digest prey.

If you decided to plant or house any type of carnivorous plant, you will need to be sure to keep them out of reach from children. Even though they are considered relatively harmless to humans, the type of digestive enzymes they produce to break down their captured prey, should be avoided.

In the wild, the bamboo orchid plant is found in the Pacific Islands and parts of Asia.  However, it can now be found in locations such as Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Panama, and Hawaii.  Though there are more areas than ever where the plant is growing, it is still at risk of extinction in several of its native habitats.  Though there used to be many of these orchids growing wild in Singapore, it is now estimated that less than two hundred plants are present in the country.The drop in orchid population is closely bound to the destruction of the rain forest.  These tropical plants thrive in tropical forests that are frequently destroyed to create grazing land.

Experienced orchid growers can successfully care for the bamboo orchid plant inside.  It is important to create the proper environment for the plant, so that it will grow and thrive.  The bamboo orchid naturally grows in humid environments.If you live in a dry location, you will be able to simulate the humidity by placing a bowl of water close to the orchid.  As the water slowly evaporates, it will simulate humidity for the plant.  While the orchid needs some sun during the day, it also needs shade.  Placing your plant near a window should give it enough exposure to light.  If you live in a tropical location, you may be able to grow your bamboo orchid outside.

One of the pleasurable spin-offs in organic gardening is finding alternative ways of coming up with the same, if not better, end result…..

Household throwaways can be valuable to the alternate enthusiast. Here are ten recyclable ideas to make gardening a little less hard on the pocket!

1. Hedge clippings: Instead of burning or direct composting, beg, borrow or even buy, if the quantity justifies the price, an electric garden muncher.

Branches up to an inch in diameter are posted into a slot and the machine munches them up into small chips. Spread these chips thickly around shrubs or fruit trees to help keep moisture in, and control the temperature of the soil.

2. Food Waste: All food waste must be composted. Composting is becoming quite an art form, and special composting bins can be bought, or very simply made.

There are many different theories and each gardener will find his or her preferred way. Keeping the compost fairly warm is the overall key to a good result. Or, if you’re in no hurry, simply keep adding to a heap, and dig out the bottom when required. Sieve before using and the compost will be ready for planting small plants and even seeds.

3. Old carpets, large damaged cardboard boxes; and similar materials can be laid over the vegetable plot in autumn to help prevent those early spring weeds appearing. Spread over a whole patch and weigh down with stones or logs. Lift off on a sunny day in early spring a few days before digging.

4. Paint trays: Keep old roller painting trays and similar containers for seed trays. Punch a few holes in the bottom for drainage. Add a little fine gravel before filling with seed compost. Seed trays shouldn’t be deeper than 15cm.

5. Yoghurt pots: All plastic yoghurt or dessert pots can be washed and saved for re-potting seedlings. Make a hole in the bottom of each and add a little fine gravel before filling with compost or soil..

6. Glass jars: Glass jars with sealable lids are excellent for storing seeds, beans and peas for planting next year. (Safe from mice as well) After washing the jars, dry in the oven to remove all traces of moisture before storing your seeds. Collect dark glass jars, or wrap paper round clear jars to prevent seeds being damaged by light.

7. Ice Lolly sticks: Make perfect row markers in your seed trays or greenhouse beds. The wooden ones won’t last for ever but you can at least write on them with pen, pencil or crayons!

8. Wire coat hangers: Make mini-cloches with discarded or broken wire coat hangers. Pull into a square shape. Place the hook in the soil and push down gently until the natural bend in the wire rests on top of the soil. Place another a short distance away in your seed bed to create two ends of a cloche. Now throw over a sheet of plastic and hold down with logs or stones.

Note: this will work only when creating very small cloches.

9. Clear plastic: Keep any clear plastic containers that could be placed upside down over a plant. Cut a mineral water bottle in half to make two handy individual cloches. Large sheets of clear plastic from packaged household items are fine for throwing over mini coat hanger cloches.

10. Aluminium bottle tops: Keep aluminium tops from milk or juice bottles, and also coloured foil around beer or wine bottles. Thread together to maka bird scarer. Simply thread with thick cotton and hang on your fruit bushes before the birds find the new fruits.

Look out for other tools for the garden from kitchen throwaways such as: old kitchen spoons and forks for transplanting tiny plants in the greenhouse. Leaky buckets for harvesting small quantities of potatoes, carrots etc; light wooden boxes for harvesting salads through the summer, and transporting pots etc;

Keep an eye on that rubbish bag and turn today’s throwaways into tomorrow’s tools!

The main advantage is cost. Even a simple lean-to greenhouse shed is more costly to build than a small indoor unit. It’s really quite easy to build an indoor greenhouse just with materials that you can buy at most home improvement stores.

Or maybe you want an indoor greenhouse, but aren’t interested in building one from scratch. Fortunately for you, it’s possible to purchase indoor greenhouse kits. You can get these in various styles and brand names. You can get them at a department store, a garden center, or an online retailer.

Indoor greenhouse kits range from a tiny herb garden that you can keep on your countertop to a kit capable of turning your basement’s shelving unit into a hothouse.

If this isn’t enough to meet your needs, it’s possible to make a basic homemade greenhouse at very little cost. Begin by building a freestanding set of shelves, about 4 shelves in total. The unit will need to be fixed firmly to the ground.
