What Is An Organic Garden?

Organic gardening is growing plants using vegetable or animal-based fertilizers in place of the synthetically made ones.

It is also about doing pest control naturally too without using the commercial insecticides. The pest control is a combination of beneficial insects and natural solutions to keep pests away without spraying harmful chemicals.

  • Growing organically might be becoming more popular today, but it has actually been around since the beginning of gardening. Chemical fertilizers did not come on the scene until the 1840s. Farming and gardening since then has been more chemically based than organically based. In recent times though it has been found that all these chemicals are harming our environment, they are also used in greenhouses. It is now being recommended that you return to using organic fertilizers for the health of your soil and the environment.

There are many benefits to gardening organically:

The food that is grown this way has more nutrients and vitamins in them to help one fight off diseases. You are also not ingesting as many chemicals eating organically-grown food. No growth hormone, pesticides, chemical fertilizers and no added preservatives or flavoring are used either.

  • Studies have proven that children have a much lower level in pesticides in their systems when they eat organic foods compared to food grown using other methods. Food grown organically gets delivered to the market with all of its nutrients intake. This food taste much better too.

Doing gardening is much more enjoyable to do organically too.

  • You don’t have to protect yourself while working with dangerous chemicals. This makes gardening much more satisfying to do. It is a great way to relax or get your daily exercise too. Gardening can even be a type of therapy for people to become more emotionally fit along with improving the overall fitness of the body. Any regular physical activity including gardening lowers your risk for obesity, certain types of diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, heart disease, and stroke.
  • Gardening organically can bring out your inner child. Remember your childhood when you played in the sandbox or made mud pies in the rain? Digging in the dirt and planting flowers or vegetables give you this same fun feeling that you had as a child.

Organic gardening is no more expensive to do than any other gardening method:

  • If you are buying your fertilizers both types cost about the same. But if you do your own composting of you kitchen and garden scraps this can cut down on how much fertilizers are needed.
  • Through the use of beneficial bugs the pesticides will not be needed as much and possibly eliminated all together. This is a natural way to control many garden pests. Many times just planting the right plants enables the plants to fight off pests, also plant or use natural elements that fight off the pest too, such as cucumber peels keep ants away.

There are many methods for gardening available today.

  • Not all of the methods use the synthetic or chemical fertilizers and pesticides. You can work in harmony with nature and have a luscious garden, by doing it organically.

Secrets to Growing Herbs in Pots

A Woman and A Window Box
Image by Simon Mark Smith via Flickr

So, you live in the city in a high-rise apartment; that does not mean you can’t have your own fresh herbs. Gardening herbs in containers is, in some ways, easier than creating a spot in a backyard garden. If you have a sunshiny kitchen window, it could be the perfect place to decorate with your favorite herbs. A creative window box or hanging basket can turn a corner of the apartment into a beautiful conversation piece in an blink of an eye . And, the truth be told, growing herbs in pots is no anymore difficult then growing other house plants. Each plant has it own set of requirements.

All plants need some variation of sun soil and water and herbs are no exception. The right combination of these elements is the key to growing every type of plant, including herbs, whether indoors or out.   A southern or western exposure will give the best measure of sunlight.   Lavender has different sunlight requirements than basil or mint but every herb needs adequate sunlight for healthy growth .  Then there are “grow lamps” to supplement the need if natural light is inadequate.

Herbs also need a well drained and not too rich a soil to grow in.   It is best to make your own soil by mixing two parts of a peat rich potting soil with one part coarse sand or perlite.with about an inch of gravel at the bottom of the container for  proper drainage.   A teaspoon of lime, per 5-inch pot, should be added to this mix make the soil sweet enough for herbs.

And now to the matter of watering your herbs – watering lightly 2 – 3 times a week should be sufficient.  Misting in between times will give them a nice moderately humid condition.   Since a pot will hold water more than the soil in a garden, it is necessary to be observant and avoid letting the roots get soaked or waterlogged. Remember well draining soil!

There are particular advantages to gardening herbs in a container, such as you can move them about as you please.   You can keep annual herbs indoors all year long however, perennial should be put outside during the summer and brought inside before the first frost.   Plants like mints, chives or tarragon will actually form firmer fresher growth after being exposed to a light frost. The beautiful flowers of chamomile or the aroma of rosemary provide more reason to grow them indoors.

All herbs can be grown in containers but some herbs do better than others.  Mint, for example, is an herb that is easily contained in a pot as well as its cousin oregano. Left alone in a garden, these two as well as thyme can take over a corner of any garden.   As I said, gardening herbs in containers is easy and takes only some special knowledge while keeping your culinary herbs available anytime you need them.

Caring for your herbs will ensure a healthy plant. With these tips and your prudence, you will be able to continuously reap your rewards keeping your herbs robust giving you a constant supply for your favorite recipes.   It is no secret that pruning plants encourages new growth.  Periodically feed them and yearly re-pot them to produce the healthiest herbs. And in the end use them in your recipes, harvest them and give them as gifts to your friends.

Raised bed of lettuce, tomatoes, 6 different t...
Image via Wikipedia

A raised vegetable garden is not just a pretty ornament to make your garden look nice – they can produce an endless supply of healthy food with very little time. In this article I want to point out just how much time you save with a raised garden as opposed to traditional gardening techniques.

It is very common to see gardeners planting their veggies in long lines about 3 feet apart. However, this method requires far, far more time than necessary. Why? The answer is digging and weeding.

It’s not that most people are too lazy to tend to their gardens, but that they have so much going on in their lives already to have the time or energy for growing vegetables. Many times it’s only when the kids have left home that parents have the chance to grow vegetables – which is too bad as I know a secret shortcut….. raised bed gardens.

So why isn’t there a raised vegetable garden in every backyard? Because of tradition. Its just the way it has always been done, and nobody seems to know how much better raised beds are.

Planting in lines has been done for generations and generations, going right back to the agricultural revolution. This layout was first conceived to allow ploughs to be dragged over fields, and a scaled down version was adopted by gardeners. The problem is that for small spaces, this is really not that efficient in terms of both the space usage and the amount of time needed to prepare and maintain the garden.

Digging the ground is something that put off the majority of people who would love to grow vegetables at home. If that isn’t bad enough, you’ve also got to weed the soil. But with a raised vegetable garden, you can avoid these problems completely because the plants are so tightly packed that the weeds are shaded out.

As there are no walk ways put between rows, around four times as much plants can be grown in the same amount of space. This means that you can grow more veggies, or that you can reclaim your garden and build that shed that you previously had no space for.

There are other advantages of raised vegetable gardens such as needing 80% less water, and being able to grow on bad soil, or any surface for that matter. However, the biggest reason for building a raised bed is the huge amount of time saved. It’s no joke that as much as 90% of time spent gardening can be saved. Instead of an hour or two a day, you only need to dedicate a few minutes.

Cottage garden at Meadows Farm.
Image via Wikipedia

Having a small garden is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, some would consider it a large blessing in a smaller package, since it takes far less garden maintenance to sustain a beautiful cottage garden. The following are landscaping tips to maximize the use of a small yard, where less is more and more is easily achieved.

    1. Your garden is bare. It’s a beautiful site to see the blank canvas before starting to paint. It is suggested one draws a sketch of the basic layout of the garden, particularly where coordinates are concerned. If one is going to incorporate feng shui, a sketch is also handy. From this initial drawing, one is now able to determine what type of designs they should use.
    2. Then one must decide which look they are going for. Do you want to create the illusion of more space, or make it seem as small and cosy as it is?
    3. This is later created by the use of certain types of foliage and using the garden’s natural contours to create the chimera of more space.
    4. After that, one must decide what theme they would like to incorporate. It can be a variety of different themes, or one underlying throughout. This is most often determined by the actual location of the garden. This must be selected carefully for maintenance purposes.
    5. Next, take a walk through the garden. You need to establish whether or not you wish to put walkways down, so get a feel for the length of the garden as well as various potential pathways. This will add to the illusion of more space.
    6. If you are going for the warm, cosy garden, you can use a lot more objects. The plants will be more lush, and one can make use of water features, statues and stones or pebbles. Bridges and decks can also be used.
    7. If cosy is the case, be careful not to clutter your garden. Less is more is too true a statement. If the garden is cluttered, it gives the ‘unkempt’ impression, and is much more difficult to maintain.
    8. If you are going for the space illusion, it is suggested that darker plants and better lighting are to be used. Darker plants, like olive green or purple, make the garden seem bigger. Employ lighting at various points. Use colours if you wish to get that night time effect.
    9. Choosing the right wall colour will also add to depth. White walls will make the garden seem bigger; whereas darker shades reduce the illusion of space. If you want to be really daring, use of mirror on the back wall. This creates much more space, or so one would think.
    10. Once your plan has been finalized, find a way to create a focal point in the garden, something that initially attracts attention. This is also a way to maximize space.

      A Guide to Planting Roses

      planting roses

Most successful growers follow a fairly universal guide to planting roses for fool-proof results. These guidelines, second nature to anyone with experience in rose cultivation, will make gardening the lavish florals an easy task for gardeners at any level of expertise.

Before committing your plants to the ground, take some time to observe the sun and shade patterns in your yard, garden, or any landscape parcel on which you intend to grow roses. Mark those spots that experience direct sunlight for at least six hours daily, ideally with the majority of sun exposure occurring in the morning.

Get an understanding of the soil quality you need to grow roses. If you have not grown roses in your yard before, you can take a soil sample to your local garden center for analysis to see what, if any preparation it needs to become rose-friendly.

A specific soil consistency with low sand and clay content, and good drainage is the best suited for growing roses. Choosing the right soil is important because of the rose plant’s complex root system, which needs a soil that provides enough give for root growth, and is able to sustain the natural fungi and other organisms that are vital to the plant’s health.

The deep roots of rose plants need unobstructed access to water. About an inch a week of deep watering should keep your roses healthy and blooming all season.  Water deeply to make sure the roots can access it; shallow watering will not provide the hydration you roses need; water needs to make it to the subsoil at least to benefit the plants.

The best soil for roses contains a natural system of bacteria and other organisms that your roses need to grow and blossom. When preparing the soil for your rose garden, make sure your new plants will not be competing with existing plants in the vicinity for water and nutrients. Steer clear of existing root systems when you dig. Roses do not thrive when planted with anything but other roses and certain non-invasive plants.

Space  your roses appropriately to give each plant unobstructed air circulation. Roses that are crowded are susceptible to powdery mildew, a disease that preys on vulnerable roses. After you’ve chosen the best spot, determine the proper depth for your roses according to the size of the root system. The climate in which you live will be a determining factor in the depth of the hole you dig; roses grown in colder climates need to establish deeper root systems to protect against freezing weather and drought at the ground surface.

Loosen the bottom soil before inserting the root ball, and mix in some bone meal and compost to boost initial root growth. Finally, pack the soil to eradicate air bubbles, and give your newly planted roses a thorough deep watering, adding extra soil if necessary as the plant settles. If your soil is good, you shouldn’t need to add fertilizer during the growing season. Maintain a deep watering schedule of twice weekly, and water in the daytime as opposed to evening to avoid powdery mildew outbreaks.

In a matter of weeks, your newly planted roses will begin bringing your yard a season full of color and fragrance.

Plus, even the research, should any need to be done can be shared between you and your pupil.

When creating your plan, you should keep in mind that a visual of the proposed end product ought to speak volumes to a child. So, show them the very plants you intend to grow while roaming through a farmers market. Let them choose, when possible, what the two of you will work with, and include them every step of the way. An Easy Guide to Transplanting Roses

      Two Roses Settled
Image by Beedle Um Bum via Flickr

If you grow roses, expect that at some point, moving them from one location to another will eventually happen.  For instance, transplanting roses might be due to the initial location not providing the bushes adequate sunlight.

All you need to do is start by looking at the new location, making sure it would be one that provides the bushes with five hours of indirect and seven hours of direct sunlight.  As a result, with the rose bush care you will have strong bushes that produce magnificent flowers.

The first step when it comes to rose planting or transplanting roses  is getting the soil ready at the new location.  This means using nutrient rich soil and digging a hold large enough to accommodate the plant’s root ball.  For the soil, placing a small amount of compost or bone meal on the bottom of the hole would certainly enrich the plant’s growth.  Back at the original location, spend time the day before transplanting to water the roses extremely well and then on the day of moving, the root ball should be wrapped inside a piece of cloth or burlap that has been thoroughly soaked with water.  If not, the root ball could dry out, causing the plant to experience damage or death.

Keep the root ball well hydrated to ensure transplanting roses to a new home is successful.  Typically, following a few simple steps will make the movement easy but even with this you might have a plant die, which is common.  Often, the younger or weaker bushes would have a more difficult time so while
no one wants to lose roses during transplanting, it could happen.  As mentioned, the hole of the new home would need to be an appropriate size so the root ball fits, giving the bushes the best chance of thriving and producing large, colorful blooms.

Most often, transplanting roses would not involve any type of pruning.  As long as you dug the bushes up and kept the root ball in one piece, the plants should do quite well.  On occasion, a transplanted rose bush will get settled into its new home and within days, begin to wilt, die off, or show some other kind of damage.  If this happens, then the dead or damaged portions would need to be pruned so the rest of the plant can thrive.

Another aspect of transplanting roses is the support the bush would need when in its new home.  The top of the rose bush must be supported.  In some cases, the top might begin to wilt at which time some pruning would be needed.  Keep in mind when planting the rose bush, the bud union should be approximately two inches over the rim of the new hole, but as you water it, the bush would begin to settle into the soil and the bud union would also settled down, ending up below the top of the hole.  Once the plant settles down, just push some of the soil around the base of the bush, giving it needed support.

While the best time of year for transplanting roses is when the bush is dormant, if you are moving from one home to another, you may not have luxury of waiting for dormancy.  The reason this is so helpful is that when rose bushes are dormant, they are in a state of rest, meaning they are not growing.  Therefore, transplanting roses at this time keeps the plant from going into shock or even dying.

In addition, if you have the chance to move the plant while dormant, chances are pruning needs would be decreased.  The bottom line is that for transplanting roses, you want to have healthy soil, a hole large enough to accommodate the root ball, keeping the root ball well watered, providing the plant with support, and choosing a location with proper sunlight.

      Rose Gardening FAQ’s

For many new gardeners who want to grow roses, the task might seem daunting perhaps because roses have unfairly been labeled as difficult to grow. Here we offer some answers to your most frequently asked questions on roses and how to grow them. Here are some common rose gardening FAQ’s.

What is the first thing I should do once I decide to add roses to my yard?

Choose the location that provides your rose plants with direct sunlight, ideally in the morning, for at least six hours. You want to give your roses a good start in the best spot possible to avoid transplanting them later, which is traumatic to the plants.

What do I need to know about the soil in my garden?

The soil you use to nourish your rose plants should have a pH of 6.5 to 6.8. The soil should have a low clay content and no sand. Use soil that is firm enough to maintain its shape when gently gathered in your hand, yet crumbles easily. Good drainage is critical to growing healthy roses, and adding peat moss to the soil can help. Also, pre-treat your soil with compost and organic nutrients before placing your roses in the ground or pot. Since the roots of rose plants grow deep, the soil you use needs to allow for deep watering for the plant to properly hydrate and draw nutrients

How often should I water my roses?

Watering roses is not complicated, but it does require that you take its deep root system into account. Ideally, two deep waterings weekly should be fine. Make sure your soil is rose-friendly, and that you saturate it well so the water can become available to the deepest roots. Surface watering does not provide adequate water for roses. Additionally, make sure to water during the day. Late evening waterings leaves them susceptible to powdery mildew, a common disease in roses.

Are there rules for spacing my rose plants?

There are guidelines that come with your rose bushes that give you proper dimensions for spacing your plants in order to get proper air circulation. Spacing your rose plants too close together can leave your plants vulnerable to troublesome powdery mildew. Rose varieties usually fare well in combination, but follow spacing instructions carefully. If you have questions along the way, take the time to ask an expert at your local garden center.

How often should I prune my roses?

Depending on the variety, most roses need some seasonal pruning, or deadheading, to keep the blossoms plentiful and flourishing.  Climbing roses require very little pruning: just once in their first year, and after that they need only be pruned once every two to three years for maximum blooms.  All other varieties of roses require pruning in spring, when they are almost ready to leave winter dormancy, as well as periodic deadheading throughout season. Keep in mind that over-pruning climbing roses will lead to fewer blooms, while pruning other varieties of roses in spring, and deadheading them through season will keep your roses flourishing into fall.

Child With Handful of Garden Slugs
Image by Pink Sherbet Photography via Flickr

I heard abut another all natural method to hold back those ever hungry slugs from eating our precious garden plants and thought I would give it a try last night.

Those pesky slugs especially like our zucchini plant. So I am going to use my zucchini plant in my experiment.

The experiment: To see how well crushed eggs shells work to keep slugs at bay. I have heard that crushed egg shells makes slugs very uncomfortable as it’s like walking on knives.

We normally put egg shells, along with the other kitchen waste, in our compost bin but I kept one egg shell, well it was the only one we had left, to use for a test.

I just took the egg shell and crushed it into pretty small pieces and sprinkled them around my zucchini plant. Not sure how well it will work with just one egg but tomorrow is grocery day so we will more soon.

I got about 5:30 this morning and just had to go out immediately to see if the slugs did any damage.

Well, like I said I only had one egg shell but I can that I only lost one blossom on my zucchini which is a huge improvement over the last few nights. I couldn’t cover every with just one egg but I am quite pleased with the results, for only having one egg shell to work with.

We don’t eat many eggs because of my heart problems but Sunday is the day we do so I will have 6 egg shells to give this little experiment another try Sunday night and see how things are Monday morning.

Weeds are removed manually in large parts of I...
      Image via Wikipedia

When it comes to our home and garden, we always try our very best to make sure that we have everything under control. Talk about pest and weed control. Not only do we make sure that we have a garden to attend to, we need to make sure that we are not growing unwanted weeds in it. More importantly, we need more than just a beautiful looking house and garden.

While we usually consider getting a perfectly natural weed killer on our first few tries, somehow when things don’t work with natural and home made remedies, we may be forced to take further action by investing on chemical herbicides to take care of such weeds. Whichever weed and grass killers we would use or whatever method we plan to choose for killing weeds should be okay as long as the means would justify the end. Again, a perfectly natural weed killer should be fine if the results are fine. However, if we still find ourselves getting crazy over weeds that won’t go away or when they already multiply in numbers, then we might be compelled to go to the next level – chemical herbicides!

Subsequently, we might have problems with mites, more specifically spider mites, eating up plant leaves and eventually leaving them dying in the process. When we are new to miticides, we might try and find out any spider mites home remedy by reading from any reputable spider mites forum. Eventually we will learn that dish soap kill spider mites and any other natural way of killing spider mites. However, if we are not successful killing spider mites the natural way, we might want to use a miticide, i.e., a product called Floramite (usually misspelled as Flormite). However, even though that this is more commonly used nowadays as miticides, you would need to gather more facts about Flormite before deciding to use such type of brand.

Going indoors, we might also need to to do some regular tidying up of our homes and make sure that they are free from molds so that there won’t be so much need for mold removal products when a natural mold removal procedure won’t work. Mold problems usually occur in our carpets, so some carpet mold removal products should make a good investment.

One of the most common problems in the home is when it is inhabited by rodents. Rodents and other pests can pose health dangers in our home. As much as we can, we want to learn how to get rid of mice without poison because we know that when we would try to poison them, they might die and rot in areas where it would be hard to find them and as a consequence, they would leave a really unpleasant smell when they start to decay. For this reason, we need to set up non toxic rat bait or any natural rodent control to make sure that we are catching them alive. However, if we are comfortable using any quick kill mouse trap, this should be one of our best rodent control options.

Now, if we have problems with mosquitoes inhabiting our homes , we need to find ways to remedy such problem. Some would use any mosquito magnet defender to make sure that mosquitoes are directed to such mosquito attractants instead of preying on our skins.

Certainly we can take control of our home and garden, with all the best choices for pest and weed control.
