Seven Tips For Organic Gardening

Organic cultivation of mixed vegetables in Cap...
Image via Wikipedia

Organic gardening is the way of growing vegetables and fruits with the use of things only found in nature.

Why would one want to indulge in organic gardening?

1.One can easily make compost from garden and kitchen waste. Though this is a bit more time-consuming than buying prepared chemical pesticides and fertilizers, it certainly helps to put garbage to good use and so saves the environment.

2. Organic farming does not use chemicals that may have an adverse affect on your health. This is especially important when growing vegetables. Chemical companies tell us that the chemicals we use are safe if used according to direction, but research shows that even tiny amounts of poisons absorbed through the skin can cause such things as cancer, especially in children.

On the average, a child ingests four to five times more cancer-causing pesticides from foods than an adult. This can lead to various diseases later on in the child’s life. With organic gardening, these incidents are lessened.

Remember, pesticides contain toxins that have only one purpose – to kill living things.

3. Less harm to the environment. Poisons are often washed into our waterways, causing death to the native fish and polluting their habitat.

4. Organic farming practices help prevent the loss of topsoil through erosion.
The Soil Conservation Service says that an estimated 30 – 32 billion tons of soil erodes from United States farmlands every year.

5. Cost savings. One does not need to buy costly chemical fertilizers and pesticides with organic gardening. Many organic recipes for the control of pest and disease come straight from the kitchen cupboard. Sometimes other plants can be grown as companions to the main crop. An example of this is the marigold, which helps to repel aphids from vegetables.

Mixing 1 tablespoon of liquid dishwashing soap and 1 cup of cooking oil can make a cheap garden pest spray. Put 3 tablespoons of this mixture in 1 quart of water and spray on plants.

6. A simple mulch of pine needles will help to suppress the growth of weeds as well as keeping the moisture in.

7. Organic gardening practices help to keep the environment safe for future generations.

Selecting the best organic fertilizer isn’t easy. There are so many to choose from, and most of the commercial ones have a lot of promises. Most farmers listen to their fellow farming enthusiasts and simply go with what’s well-liked, but as a home gardener I have to ask a lot of questions.

I found this article in an article directory and thought it might help my readers and fellow gardeners know how to choose the best organic fertilizers for their home garden.

Learning A Little About Organic Fertilizers

First of all, let’s identify what a good fertilizer is. It should be something that will help you make the most of the organic setting where you will begin planting. This means choosing a formulation will have to depend on the soil variety, climatic factors and the nutrient needs of your crops.

For instance, the soil around you is missing a certain mineral. You can use natural fertilizers to supply the desired mineral. This is possible because diverse types of organic fertilizers serve different purposes.

Next, mind your crop category. Azaleas and rhododendrons in particular can grow well in acidic soil. In the case of these plants, having iron, manganese and sulfur (and their derivatives) may help. Fertilizer formulas that can alleviate soil pH are crucial if your crop type can’t stand too much acidity.

Seaweed fertilizers can improve root growth. Another organic fertilizer to consider is bat guano, which can boost flowering and fruiting percentage. Bone meal may speed up root elongation and budding in seedlings. Alfalfa meal is one of the fast-release kinds of fertilizers to utilize if you are growing roses. You may also look into how organic fertilizers like kelp, fish emulsion and gluten meal can help your garden.

Liquid fertilizes such as fish emulsion can instantly provide trace elements to plants because the formula can be taken up fast. Because of this, an organic fertilizer in liquid form can be sprayed on leaves.

The main reason for selecting the best fertilizer for your crops should be the quantity of vitamins, amino acids and enzymes in the formulation, as well as the ease of absorption of these elements by the plants.

If you are not sure about the precise quantity of minerals in an organic fertilizer, check the label and look for the nitrogen content. A good lawn fertilizer will always include a hefty amount of nitrogen (eight to ten percent).

With so many organic products and materials on hand, you can select from many different types of fertilizers. Sometimes, finding the best fertilizer to make use of in your garden may take a while. But if you’ve the patience to observe the way your plants respond to each one, you will soon find the right one for your gardening needs.

Good Advice For Growing an Indoor Garden

kitchen herbs

Many novice indoor gardeners get disappointed when they plant something that doesn’t thrive. The good news is that it’s not that hard to have a successful indoor garden; you just need to follow a few basic tips for healthy plants. Cleaning your indoor house plants, having the best lighting, choosing the right container sizes and selecting the right plants for your home are just some of the things you should keep in mind. Here are a few tips that should get you started.

When you choose to grow an indoor garden, there are certain supplies you will need. Depending on if your home is an apartment or a rented house, space can be limited. If you don’t have enough window sills, consider hanging containers. There are also plant stands that you can purchase in a variety of sizes dependent on the space you have. They can come in single, multi-shelf and tiered. Decide on where you want to grow your indoor garden in your home before determining how many plant stands you might need to buy.

In the summer, indoor house plants need a stronger dose of light because of the humidity. The plants should be placed in the window sill and requires at least six to eight hours of light. In the winter, you can give the plants four hours of light but make sure the plants are not right up against the cold windows. There are many specific lighting requirements for plants so make sure that you select plants that work well with your home’s natural light. If you choose to supplement with artificial light, make sure to research the light bulbs you are using to verify that they go hand in hand with what you are growing. There are many lights that can easily kill what you are trying to grow indoors. Always ask the shop you’re buying your equipment from regarding what they recommend for your indoor lighting needs.

All indoor plants will need water and a watering device is essential. There is the simple watering can to something even more elaborate depending on what you need. You can choose from the expensive glass bulbs to stick into the soil of the house plants to something simple like adding a plastic water bottle to a stake inside the pot or container. There are many self-watering pots that you can buy now and mats like a capillary mat which can work great if you go on vacation.

Once you start growing your indoor garden, fertilizer is a necessary component to your garden. Most people think that if the garden is not in the ground, fertilizer is not needed. When you grow an indoor garden, the soil is stripped of its nutrients during the growth process. With organic gardening becoming quite popular, an organic fertilizer may be ideal for your indoor garden. If you don’t find it too difficult, compost and worm castings can be a good supplement for your indoor garden to ensure the nutrients are being met.

Avid indoor gardeners might be interested in hydroponic gardening as a way to grow flowers and vegetables for their home year round. One of the simplest ways you can do this is by using a hydroponics grow tent, which provides your plants with the perfect conditions to flourish.

Viewing Life From A Hammock

Hammock in HDR

My son and I were looking out my office window, into the bitter cold backyard where it’s 2 feet of snow instead of green grass. Even though it was so cold and snowy we were talking about where we want to put our hammock this year.

Spend an afternoon lazing in a hammock to de-stress from your busy lifestyle. This relaxation time will counteract the stress caused by other aspects of a busy life. These points are:

Find an environment that is comfortable and relaxing.Even though this sounds obvious, it is never the less an easily overlooked point. How often aren’t we trying to relax on the couch with the television going on, telephones ringing and other people interrupting? Such a situation will only enforce our idea that we live an uncontrolled, hostile, stressful life.

Make sure you have no pressing tasks. It is very rare in this day and age that someone will have nothing at all to do so you will need to take control of the situation.Complete relaxation is not that easy to achieve, you will need to concentrate on clearing your mind before you let the feeling of relaxation take over your body.Lay back in your hammock for a few minutes or hours if you can and let the feeling of relaxation come to you as you slip into a meditative state.Don’t be fooled into feeling that you don’t need to spend such time relaxing as everbody does and the more you fight it the more necessary it must be.

In conclusion, a long Sunday afternoon spent in contemplation without any phones or people interrupting can give you a new invigorated perspective on your busy lifestyle and relief all the stresses of the week. You may already find such peace through meditation or prayer, but if not then there’s all the more reason to relax in a hammock, even if you don’t actually have a hammock take some time out to yourself. To find shops that sell hammocks in your area, probably the best thing to do is search on-line, you may also find on-line stores that will deliver direct to your door.

Organic Seedlings Make An Instant Organic Garden

organic seedlings

Providing yourself and your family with safe and healthy food from your own organic garden is very popular these days. Some people however, don’t start with this activity because they find it very time consuming. But by using organic seedlings straight from the garden center you make it much easier.

Without spending extravagant amounts of money and time. The drawback of normal gardening as a hobby is that the whole process has been a slow and time consuming process. But as in all things in this modern world, time is becoming a major factor in every form of activity and so the instant organic garden was born. The term instant organic gardening is still relatively new but we do know some of the techniques for years in the form of using organic seedlings and plants. this type of vegetable growing is also very suitable for children.

The solution is in organic seedlings

The best option is to grow your own fruits and vegetables; they will not only be completely fresh and healthy but will have had a zero environmental impact. But the main reasons people have to not become involved in organic gardening is the time and effort that is needed to both start and maintain a garden. This is why the instant organic garden came into being. You can start an instant organic garden with organic seedlings bought from a gardening store. The (large) pot may be either a permanent one suitable for indoor use or a bio-degradable one that can be planted directly in the ground. The soil you need for the organic seedlings is chemical free and it is usually supplied along with organic soil nutrients and plant supplements to keep the organic seedlings healthy without the use of any strong and harmful chemicals.

The advantages of using organic seedlings

When you use organic seedlings or even organic plants you will create an immediately present garden, it its almost instantly ready to harvest. You do not need to seed and wait before anything is visible. You just buy healthy organic seedlings and plants and you are ready to go. This quick and easy type of gardening is also suitable for children.

The Barbers' Garden: Shrub Rose
Image by bill barber via Flickr

When you start out growing roses, you’re going to want the best advice and information that’s available. Much of this you can research yourself, such as in books and on websites, but if you have a rose society in your area, then you have a wealth of information and help just waiting to be tapped. And getting in touch with one of these groups gives you access not just to information on creating a rose garden, but to all sorts of other resources as well.

These societies may at first have been founded largely as groups to support and inform local people about how to grow roses generally, however a number of them have combined their efforts to operate in part as developers and regulators of roses as well. Now they do things like registering names for new kinds of roses, and they help to set criteria for judging the development and shape of the blooms.

The World Federation of Rose Societies (WFRS) is also working with its members to develop a massive database that will make facts accessible to everybody in the planet, on everything from the numerous kinds, to how to care for roses, to rose conventions.

These organizations take note of new books about growing roses, and make them known to rose growers in general. They also set up conferences where rose varieties from all over the world can be exhibited and their various qualities assessed, with awards given for the best specimens. These conventions are forums for the exchange of information from country to country, and deal with everything from garden design to the strengthening of roses against disease.

These organizations devoted to the rose are great resources for flower gardening in general, but they also sometimes sponsor research into diseases and other rose-related problems. So they aren’t just information sources. They are involved in conservation efforts as well as the registration of new and old rose varieties from many different regions of the world. Smaller, more local societies may be mainly concerned just with growing roses, but as they band together and contribute to their national and international counterparts, they become a major force in preserving information about roses and perpetuating them into the future.

Rose gardening can be difficult for the novice gardener. They do take extra work and require some knowledge. Thankfully there are plenty of places to get the help you need to create a beautiful rose garden.

Soil Mixing
Image by USFS Region 5 via Flickr

Various crops grow more in particular soil varieties than others, have you noticed? It must be the top soil factors, the natural composition and the type of soil you have in your backyard. One of the fundamental aspects of organic gardening is making the soil as conducive to planting as possible. Keep reading to learn how to use organic fertilizer to enhance plant yield.

Soil fertilizers don’t directly influence the crop. But rather, they help promote a better soil environment for the helpful soil microorganisms and animals to live in.

Top soil is made up of a blend of organic substance and moisture. Most of the organic substance in the soil is from rotting plant parts, animals and microorganisms. The natural substance in soil is further decomposed to yield the reserves that crops need. A high soil natural substance content can add to the growth of crops, especially in terms of blossoming and fruiting.

The idyllic situation in organic agriculture is that the soil can supply most of the nutrients that the crops need to develop, even without synthetic fertilizers. When these trace elements are lacking, the yield of the crop as well as tolerance to certain plant disorders will plummet. If your plants are showing symptoms of disorders even if you’ve managed to inhibit pests from entering your plot, the most probable causes are top soil pH discrepancy and soil nutrient deficiency.

You can add soil fertilizers such as green manure or waste components from organic sources to improve soil productiveness and enhance organic content. If you’re wondering what green manure is, it’s simply what we call plants that encourage nitrogen fixation (by organically occurring soil bacteria) in soils. This means growing these plants can help improve the organic nitrogen content in the soil, which can really improve soil health.

By the way, If the top soil in your garden is unhealthy, which means plants cannot develop in it, you may need to think about using organic soil fertilizers such as kelp, manure or fish suspension. You can keep at it for a few months until your soil acid base ratio becomes stable.

Tomato plants in the garden.
Image via Wikipedia

Don’t you just love a ripe juicy tomato? Well it’s really simple to grow those  juicy and delicious tomatoes. There is more than a one way to make sure your tomato crop is constantly higher year after year.

What To Do First

You need to decide which variety of tomatoes you will be cultivating, we tend to go with the tomatoes of my childhood but each year we do try new hybrids which are less prone to pests and diseases. Some varieties are sweeter than the rest when grown in an ideal site, while others are highly reliant on soil type. The ones we like we grow again the next year.

You also have to think about the farming techniques you’re going to make use of for your tomato plots. You may pinch out the suckers, as some gardeners do, but you can also choose not to. There are gardeners who build cages or put up stakes to hold up the plants, while other growers let their crops trail on the ground.

We found that the smaller tomato cages were useless as our tomato plants grew so massive they just crushed the thin wire frame. We are building stronger frames for the tomato plants to climb by using stronger stakes and perhaps fencing strong enough to hold the weight.

If you want lots of healthy tomatoes you will need to feed them periodically. Because of this, you are required to pick a fertilizer that has a high volume of the required nutrients, such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.

Last year we went without any fertilizer for our tomatoes and we still had so many that they destroyed our cages. Not sure if we want them to do even better. Okay, yes we do so we will be using fertilizer this coming season.

Before buying a fertilizer product, check the label for the NPK ratio. This corresponds to the amount of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in the fertilizer formula. For instance, a package with 5-5-5 on it indicates equivalent parts of N, P, and K are present, while 5-1-1 means the tomato fertilizer holds five times as much nitrogen as phosphorus and potassium.

Each ingredient plays an important role in the growth of your tomato plants. For greener leaves, nitrogen is crucial. For better and on-time flowering and fruiting, you need the right quantity of phosphorus. Rooting and root enlargement can be improved by potassium.

If, like most tomato plant gardeners in the world today, your goal is to keep everything organic, you can use fish emulsion liquid fertilizer instead of synthetic fast-release fertilizers to supply the needed minerals to your tomato crop. An organic fertilizer in liquid form can easily be absorbed by your plants, and is ideal for a fast developing plant like tomato. You can spray this tomato fertilizer directly on your plants, or you can apply them to the soil in granule form.

Brian Farrell with helper plants at Our Commun...
Image via Wikipedia

When we bought the home we live in now the garage and basement had all kinds of poisons to put on the property to kill off stuff they didn’t want growing or to kill weeds in the lawn. We never used them once and had to call the local landfill just to find out how to dispose of such death.

We didn’t realize we were going to be organic gardeners, never actually thought about it, we just didn’t want to have poisons around.

We may find that we do things that make us NOT organic gardeners but if we are I don’t know about it yet. You can be sure I will change if I find something we thought to be organic that isn’t. We want to be 100% organic so we know we are doing everything we can to live healthier and organically.

I feed beer to our garden slugs, I hear a lot of burping out there at night, so I think they have fun before they expire, I hope that’s still organic.

We prefer to dig out rather than spray with pesticides. Before we resort to digging out deep rooted plants we don’t want we will look for an organic method that will kill it, if not we start digging.

We do try to grow things that cover the grounds so weeds don’t get a start and use mulch to cover other areas. It helps keep the weeds down and the moisture from evaporating so quickly on those warm or hot days.

One thing that we know is organic for sure is our compost. We found a compost bin out behind the garage when we moved here but they had never even used it. We only use yard and kitchen waste that is able to be composted. All we have to do is turn it a bit and add water to it.

We try not to use city water as it has chlorine in it so we collect rain water in a barrel and use that when we can. We are going to add a couple more barrels because we didn’t collect enough rain water to do the job so we did have to use city water for most of the summer.

We sleep better knowing we are doing our part at going 100% organic.

How to Grow Your Own Pumpkin

Pumpkins growing in a field
Image via Wikipedia

Growing your own Halloween pumpkin is it’s own adventure! The end result is your own Jack O lantern creation that you started from a seed!  While most varieties of pumpkins are fairly hardy, there are pointers that can help you produce a giant pumpkin sure to impress your family and friends when Halloween rolls around. Here is what you need to know about growing pumpkins for Halloween:

Starting the seeds. It is crucial to know when to start your seed in order to have fully grown pumpkins by Halloween.  Keep in mind that the earliest pumpkin starts are for Giant Pumpkins that require 150 days or more of growing time. Giant pumpkin growers time their starts for maximum growth in order to produce a world record fruit in time for the fall weigh offs which run from early to mid October. You should note that there is plenty of flexibility on the start date for other varieties. These can be timed to mature from September to October, and can be started indoors or out. While fully mature pumpkins are particularly hardy, new growers should take note that pumpkins are tender annuals. Frost will kill them, and cold weather will stunt their growth. You should keep this in mind when starting your plants. Recommended “ideal” starting dates for your pumpkin plants are as follows:

  • Giant Pumpkins:  Start indoors from April 25 to May 15th Set outdoors after the first true leaves form. Provide cold and frost protection.
  • Jack-O-Lanterns / Field Pumpkins: Direct sow into the garden from May 15th to June 15th. Start indoors up to two weeks prior to setting outdoors Provide cold and frost protection.
  • Miniature Pumpkins: Direct sow into the garden from May 25th to July 1st. Start indoors up to two weeks prior to setting outdoors

How many pumpkins will you get? One pumpkin plant will normally produce three to five pumpkins. Miniature varieties have been known to produce up to a dozen or so. There will usually be several more female fruit, but some of them will not develop for a number of reasons. Keep in mind that if you are growing pumpkins for size and weight (giant pumpkins), you will eventually select one pumpkin and remove the rest from the vine. By doing this, you allow the plant to direct all of it’s energy into growing just that one pumpkin. It should be noted that a small number of growers keep a second fruit on the vine as an “insurance policy” in case disaster strikes the first fruit. You should understand however that this does not preclude the possibility that you can grow enormous pumpkins if you keep more than one on the vine.

Adding weight to your pumpkin. If you so choose you can turn your everyday pumpkin into a giant pumpkin. You will need to fuel the growth of your fruit to produce the biggest pumpkins you have ever seen. Of special note is that in August, you also need to be diligent and guard against insects and plant disease, especially powdery mildew. Here are some additional tips for adding weight to your pumpkins:

  • Keep your patch well watered. This is a great way to get your kids involved. Turn over a small amount of soil and see if it is moist several inches down.
  • Adding a layer of compost feeds the plant and helps to retain soil moisture. It can also help to keep weeds down.
  • Keep in mind that big pumpkins have big appetites. Regular applications of fertilizer will yield the best results. Switch to a fertilizer that is high in potassium to really bump up the weight of your pumpkin.
  • Cover the pumpkin vines with garden soil. This will promote secondary root growth, and results in much bigger pumpkins.

Composite image to illustrate the diversity of...
Image via Wikipedia

As you begin in making your herb garden, learning about indoor and outdoor plants, being aware of their life cycle is much needed. A plant life cycle diagram can assist you in learning when your plant may flower, when you can breed your species, and when a few types of species should be watered or dehydrated. By researching the life cycle of your plants, you can ensure its longevity. In the case of unique or pricey species, this can aid to guard your investment.

A good plant life cycle diagram will include several aspects. First, it will contain all stages of a plant’s life, from the production of the seed to death. If the plant life cycle diagram is missing any phase of the development of the species you are researching, your chances of properly caring for or breeding your plant will be greatly brought low.

The most basic phases of a plant’s life cycle include the seeds phase, germination phase, the seedling stage, the vegetative stage, the flowering stage and the pollination phasee and death. Depending on the type of specimen that you are learning about, this cycle may not be the same.

Due to the nature of a plant life cycle diagram, it is uncommon that the chart itself will be linear. Expect a web chart that shows how seeds are created within the middle of the life span of a plant. As seeds grow during the flowering or pollination phase of the plant’s life cycle, you should be able to see when the plant seeds. This is particularly vital for those planning to breed specimens such as mints. Cycles will be different depending on the reproductive cycle of the species. As many species can reproduce through duplication or seeding, not every plant life cycle diagram will be equal. As a basic rule that you should follow, the more exotic or rare a plant is, the more detailed its diagram will be to show the full cycle of the specimen.

If you are wanting to breed your specimens, you will want to keep the relevant data on hand. Your primary focus in the plant life cycle diagram will be on the pollination, flowering and seeding of your type of species. In planting your herb garden, all aspects of this, ranging from required temperature changes, watering changes and condition changes to promote reproduction is the most vital.

In making your herb garden, you should be knowledgeable of the reproductive cycle of your specimen, as their upkeep tends to change during this period of life. If you are properly caring for your plant, the reproductive cycle of your plant will be extended. This usually yields lasting and more frequent flowering periods.

Venus Flytrap 2

In making your herb garden, if you want to have a very different gardening experience, carnivorous plants are bound to get attention. From the common Venus Flytrap to the Cobra plant, these interesting plants serve several purposes. In regions that have high populations of bugs, it decreases the number of flies or other insects that annoy you. While the benefit is strictly related to the size and species of carnivorous plants that you own, these plants can grant a small level of relief while providing entertainment to adults and children alike.

There are five unique classifications of carnivorous plants. The famous type, the same family that the Venus Flytrap contains, is the snap trap family. Snap traps rely on a mouth that closes in around its victim, where the plant will eat anything it snares.

The second classification are pitfall traps. These traps require victim falling into the plant and being unable to escape. These types undergo constant evolution, as water can pool in the pitchers of the plant as well as the bugs that the plant devours. These plants range from colorful to unattractive, and do not have moving parts like their snap trap counterparts.

Flypaper traps are among some of the most interesting carnivorous plants. These plants secrete a glue which traps and breaks down insects for food. These carnivorous plants should be approached with caution in the residence, as the secretions can cause irritation to the skin.

Bladder traps are quite fascinating. These plants function through the osmosis of water to create a suction within the body of the plant. Once an insect or aquatic species has been trapped within, escape is difficult. Unlike many carnivorous plants, these are more commonly found underwater than above ground. Some classifications of the bladder traps, like the Bladderwort, don’t have roots, which makes them quite a creative addition to your collection in the garden.

Finally, the lobster pot traps are among one of the most odd appearing carnivorous plants that you can buy. These plants survive by giving bugs an easy way to gain entry, but little chance of escaping. In the case of the corkscrew plant, the innards of the plant have downward pointing obstacles and a y-shaped leaf form that halts the escape of its prey. The unusual shapes of lobster pot traps are directly related to their evolution to halt the escape of insects.

For those wanting in borderline species for their herb gardening pots, there are several varieties of plants that do not meet all of the requirements of carnivorous plants, but have sharing characteristics. Such plants include the Brocchinia Roridula and the Martyniaceae species. These types of plants do not have one of the three required aspects, which is to attract, kill and digest prey, to be considered as a proper carnivorous plant.

In making your herb garden, carnivorous plants should be tended where young children and babies cannot reach them. While some of them are relatively non-threatening to people, the consumption of these plants should not be followed, due to the digestive enzymes that the plant utilizes to eat their victim.

Freshly harvested worm castings Category:Compost
Image via Wikipedia

There is a reason why there’s a saying that all creatures are important, big and small, from the beetle to the tiniest spider. One of the most important creatures is the inconspicuous earthworm. You may not know this but an earthworm is a gardener’s best friend. They don’t only exist for you to gross your sister out or for kids’ amusement.

Aristotle called earthworms “the intestines of the earth”. Now imagine a human being without intestines, not even possible. Charles Darwin said that everything that exists has been through the bodies of earthworms. Amazing isn’t it? Without earthworms you can only but imagine the catastrophic consequences. It is our responsibility to maintain a green earth as we as humans have the resources and capabilities to destroy or improve the earth. We have luckily discovered the amazing capabilities of earthworms to help us along a bit.

Earthworms burrow through the earth to make pathways, consequently allowing in air, water and plant roots to enrich soil. Earthworm castings (earthworm poop) contain compounds that improve plants’ resistance to disease. This is not just a myth but it has been proven that gardens are significantly and noticeably healthier with help of earthworms than those gardens that contain fewer. Earthworms can clear the soil of certain types of contaminants, like PCBs. Earthworms also not only help to improve your soil but they are a vital source of food for some predators this contributes to the circle of life. Also next time you want to cook spaghetti bolognaise you can also replace spaghetti with earthworms, as they are a great source of protein (some cultures do eat them for protein).

Composting is one of the key ingredients of having a healthy garden. Composting is in fact a great natural habitat for earthworms. When planting something new in your garden you should spread a nice think layer of compost on the top. If you mix the compost with earthworms and some other worms you will find that this speeds up the process of growth and restoration. This is called vermicomposting.

If you are considering vermicomposting at home there are a few thing s you need for this. The one thing is a bin; you can use anything really, from plastic to metal. There are bins that are better for the worms and the compost for example metal isn’t the best choice as it can rust send heavy metal though the compost it also heats up faster than most materials.

Vermicompost gives seedlings a really good start in life and earthworms are part of this wonderful process of maintaining a beautiful garden. Making the earth greener starts with you and you don’t have to have millions to make a difference. Earthworms are your key making a difference.

A Guide to Growing Roses From Cuttings

Rose
Image by Gertrud K. via Flickr

You may want to learn how to grow roses but perhaps can’t afford to get them from a garden center. Or maybe you don’t want to waste time and money on rose bushes from such a source until you know for sure you have the right kind of green thumb. One way of finding out what color your thumb is may be by trying to grow a rose bush from a cutting. Do you have a friend or acquaintance with a rose garden? They might be willing to give you a few cuttings, so you can try the experiment.

You’ll have to pick your roses carefully, though, because not all types of roses grow well from cuttings. It’s likely some expert gardeners have managed to do it even with the difficult varieties, like hybrid teas. But if you still don’t know much about how to grow roses, or you’re not very experienced, then you will find varieties that simply will not grow by this method. Of course do some research to get specifics, but you can be fairly confident trying this with varieties like floribundas or miniatures.

You ought to do rose pruning in the first part of spring, taking three or four six-inch stems (or three inch stems for miniatures). Cut them on a slight diagonal, in the morning before the stresses of the day.

In the past, people knew how to grow roses with cuttings protected by Mason jars, and the practice still does the trick. So as soon as you have your cuttings, remove the lower leaves, with just a few at the top, and immerse the stems into a rooting powder. Then position them either into your garden soil or into containers of potting soil. At this point, place a Mason jar over each stem and water from time to time during the next few weeks.

When teaching people how to grow roses via cuttings, some recommend using containers with heating pads under them to encourage root development, though that may not be necessary if you’ve used rooting powder. In milder climates you should be able to grow the roses right outside, and may not even need Mason jars. Either way, it should take one or two months for the cuttings to become rooted. Once that has happened, and with continued research and rose care, you should be able to start creating a rose garden. You may discover your green thumb, and realize that this method of rose propagation is something you want to continue exploring.

Rose gardening can definitely be challenging to those that are not blessed with a green thumb. But anyone can grow rose gardens if they have the right tools and choose the right type of roses for their environment.

When it comes time to cut firewood for that Christmas fire or do a clean up after a major tropical storm came through nothing comes in more handy than a chainsaw. When it is time to go shopping for a chainsaw, you have two options electric corded, electric cordless or gas powered. Now before start thinking “an electric chainsaw come on now! I need something that breathes fire!” You might think again, unlike in the past when electric chainsaws were a bit underpowered those days are gone. Now days electric saws have more than enough power to handle the bulk of everyday pruning and cutting.

There are a lot of advantages to owning an electric saw. Some of them are lightness. Electric chainsaws are a great deal lighter than their fire breathing cousins the gas powered chainsaws. And if you have a lot of cutting to do, especially over head cutting you’ll really come to appreciated the difference in weight.

Maintenance is another issue. electric chainsaws are much easier to maintain. Just plug them in and you’re good to go. With gas saws they’re just more complex and so there are more parts on them. The more parts you have the more parts there are to break. And let’s not forget the issues with guessing the chainsaw’s temperature and adjusting the choke  on them.

Convenience is another major advantage. No mixing and storing gasoline. No gasoline means you don’t have to worry about spilling it all over your saw. Not to mention the hassles of storing gasoline and going out to buy it. And then there are the problems associated with mistakes mixing the gas and oil mixture. If you don’t get the gas oil ratio right, the saw might not start.

Remington makes fairly good smaller saws that are ideal for light duty jobs like pruning smaller limbs. Remington electric chainsaws aren’t terribly powerful but if all you need to do is some light cutting then they work pretty well and they’re quite affordable. Some are as cheap as .)

But if you need more power than I recommend stepping up to a Makita electric chainsaw. You’ll pay more for this saw – easily twice but they last much longer have more power and are more reliable. There is a pretty good reason why you see them on so many work trucks. The brand name of Makita is associated with rock solid reliabiltiy and high quality.

Buying an electric chainsaw is a great investment when you add up all the advantages that lighter cheaper saws offer.
