Every Year Our Rhododendrons Are More Beautiful
They last a couple of weeks but would it sure would be great to have them around a few more weeks.
Our lilac rhododendron is the biggest of the two we have and is the first to blossom and then a week later the rhododendron with the crimson blossoms open and the lilac rhododendron seems to fade into the background.
A Short But Rather Embarrassing Story
In 2004 I had a heart attack that couldn’t be fixed and was left weaker than I’ve ever been. I think I was stronger as a baby. In 2005 we bought our home and I started dreaming of home gardening but first I had to get get rid of three of the ugliest plants I can remember seeing. They had big brown leaves that made them looked diseased.
I decided I wanted them out of there and so I started with the smallest first as I didn’t have a lot of energy to start with. I think it took me about a week but I managed to get it cut down and dug out of our yard. I then dragged it behind the garage until spring clean up pick up.
By the time I finished destroying the first ugly dead looking plant I didn’t have the energy to take on the second one so I just cut it off at the ground and decided to leave the biggest one until much later.
Then It Blossomed And I Nearly Fainted
Not long after I removed the small rhododendron and cut off the next larger one the biggest one started producing the biggest and most gorgeous lilac coloured blossoms and I nearly cried. All Jenny could do was pat me on the back and laugh. She still laughs when the subject comes up.
About three years later we noticed a little growth coming out of the ground early spring. It was right were the rhododendron I’d cut off had been. So we left that spot and didn’t run the mower over. Slowing the rhododendron grew back.
It took a couple more years but then it put out its first blossom, a beautiful crimson blossom and today it’s blossom again but now it has more than a dozen blossoms and is the highlight of our yard this spring.
I don’t cut things down now before giving what ever it is an opportunity to impress me.
