So Much Flavour In Just One Strawberry Plant
Started Last Year From One Strawberry Plant
Last year we had one strawberry plant. This year we had a feast of strawberries. Trust me it was worth waiting a whole year for that fresh flavour.
I was amazed at just how fast that one little strawberry plant grew. In just a few weeks we had to move it from the pot I had it planted in to a much bigger area so we could control the runners.
Once I transplanted it to the raised bed above I let it go crazy and now our one little plant has turned into a section of about 3 feet by 8 feet and will likely take up the entire 12 foot box by next year.
We were enjoy the fruits of our labour a couple of weeks ago as were the birds so we had to buy a mess net to put over them. Didn’t actually need to use this year though. I will put it over them come next spring so we get the berries before our bird friends do. I may share a couple with them but that’s all.
We can hardly wait for other things in our garden to reach the eating point so we can experience even more fresh garden flavours.
I shared the first strawberry of the season with my wife. It was the best tasting strawberry she has had in a long while. I felt exactly the same way.
Our strawberries are already done for the season and just yesterday I heard that the U-Pick strawberry farms are now open for business.
We were weeks ahead of them. It must be because our strawberries are in a box above ground level. The sun must have warmed that area up enough to give them a big head start over the rest of the yard.
I think that I will take a few runners, get them started in a pot and then transplant them to a new section in our garden.
Then I can watch them both and see how much faster the raised bed produces over our garden.
If they produce weeks apart it will mean we have our own strawberries for longer and maybe enough enough to preserve some for the winter months.
