Get That First Herb Garden Started
Remembering back to when I was just a kid I remember our home garden was huge and a lot of work. Well that was almost a half century ago and now I realize it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was. I was just more interested in playing than pulling out weeds, no matter how much fun you told me it was going to be.
In reality when we started our first real home garden it wasn’t as much work as I had remembered, but it did take some effort, but was worth it. Now if you are wondering if it will be worth it for you I would suggest you might want to start with a little herb garden or two.
Container Gardening Herbs
Growing herbs in pots or containers is so easy. But you could actually have two herb gardens even with small spaces. The secret lies in pots. This technique is known as container gardening.
We started with pots that we found lying around in the garage when we moved here but you don’t have to use plain containers. Go out to your local nursery or whatever store sells good looking containers and post. We have looked at galvanized steel pots that don’t rust. How about some old cooking pots you were going to trash? I have even seen old tires that were painted to look kinda cool. Just put your mind to work and I am sure you will find something that will look cool.
We even found an old wooden 45 gallon barrel that was too leaky to use as a rain barrel so we got it cut in half and now have two half barrels full of dirt and plants.
We also used normal flower pots you can by for a buck, they work just as well. Maybe they don’t impress the neighbours but the herbs I grow taste just as good.
Start An Indoor Herb Garden
Don’t have the space outdoors, or it’s a little late in the season to start growing outdoors. It doesn’t matter, just start your herb garden indoors, like we did.
We moved them outdoors when the weather was better but by then we were already harvesting bits of herbs for our meals. How cool is that, just reach over to the window and clip some basil for our spaghetti sauce.
If you have a south facing window, a pot, some dirt and water then you have what you need to grow an indoor herb garden of your very own. They are extremely low maintenance, so you have no excuse not to give herb gardening indoors a try.
We bought a little shelf unit, quite small, but I was able to stack our herb pots one above the other and immediately our windows was able to product about 3 times as many herbs.
Outdoor Herb Garden
In the spring we put a window box outside our window and just transferred the pots outdoors. Then we just opened the window, snipped off the herbs we wanted and closed the window. So easy and it also impressed our friends. That was worth it all right there.
Our first herb garden that wasn’t a container garden was planted along the side of the duplex we rented. It didn’t take much space at all. So don’t put off starting your own herb garden both indoors and outdoors. You can use this great little herb gardening ebook to help you get started.
