Developing Bonsai Trees Is A Most Satisfying Pastime
Image by jcolman via FlickrWatching bonsai grow and shaping them into beautiful sculptures is a fascinating and extremely rewarding pastime. Growing bonsai trees isn’t an expensive hobby with few tools needed, but a beautiful bonsai tree can be more of a centrepiece in your home than many ornaments can. A bonsai is a living sculpture.
Bonsai are container planted plants or trees that are grown to be small versions of the natural size tree. Bonsai can be created from almost any perennial woody stemmed trees and shrubs that produce branches and can develop small through container confinement with the help of root and crown trimming.
A Bonsai tree can be grown from seed, from young shoots lifted from the countryside, (please comply with any local laws regarding taking wild plants in your region), or can be ordered as ready grown bonsai trees. Although growing bonsai from seed is the slowest route, but you do have maximum control over how your bonsai tree will look.
Bonsai are planted in special pots that restrict the development of the roots but also enhance the beauty of your bonsai. Special soils can be bought that provide the perfect environment for your bonsai to develop.
Many specialist methods are employed to sculpt and give unique character to your bonsai including leaf trimming, wiring branches, grafting, dwarfing and deadwood, (aging and adding character to the bark). Not many specialist tools are required to shape bonsai, and these are easy to come by cheaply. Everything you need to get started can be easily bought from a specialist bonsai nursery.
Bonsai trees are available as both indoor and outdoor types, and some bonsai are best if they are left outside during summer months and then brought inside in the winter months.
And for anyone that likes the idea, but does not want to maintain bonsai, you can buy artificial bonsai.
If you are wondering if developing bonsai trees is for you, I say have a go, bonsai are simple to grow and maintain, take very little of your spare time, every bonsai tree is unique, and who doesn’t admire a bonsai whenever they see one.
