Most people would have enjoyed the peace and serenity provided by a pond in a garden from time to time. A garden pond is more than just a landscape feature – it creates a warm, welcoming and relaxing environment. A backyard pond adds an exciting element to any garden and will provide a focal point for your landscaping plans. However, are you aware that a garden pond can be of benefit to local fauna?
Depending on the region where you live many wildlife species may enjoy the benefits of your pond. Butterflies and birds, frogs and fish, snails, turtles and insects will all benefit from having access to a pond. By attracting this type of wildlife, you can add to the enjoyment that your pond will bring you. You can even make a Koi pond as koi fish make great pets and are so much fun to watch.
Humans Love Ponds Too
When you widen the term “local wildlife” to include your friends and family, you’ll see that there are many benefits to making a pond in your garden. There are proven health benefits associated with practicing relaxation techniques, and spending time by a garden pond is certainly a relaxing endeavor. If you are feeling stressed, spending time by your garden pond can have a truly calming effect and change your mood.
A backyard pond can create beauty in your life. Ponds and water features can create an exciting new environment for your family from a haven of relaxation to a scientific way to educate your children about an ecosystem.
Pond Pets
Backyard ponds can even provide an environment for special pets. Koi fish make interesting pets that will adapt to life in a back yard pond. Koi are a member of the carp family and can grow up to three feet long. Koi are known as long living fish so keeping koi should not be considered a casual hobby. Treat them right and they may even out live you.
However, if you are prepared for the commitment of caring for koi, they will add to the sense of serentiy provided by your koi pond. Watching these graceful koi fish swim and interact with each other is a peaceful experience.
How To Start With Garden Pond Design
Due to the popularity of ponds, you will find pond kits in most nurseries or garden centers and they’ll include easy instructions on how to make a pond. If you would prefer to have a professional handle the installation, many landscaping firms will be able to help and by grabbing a copy of “How To Make A Pond” you’ll be well equipped to discuss your requirements and have an understanding of pond design.

Garden ponds are great, especially if they have a waterfall feature. I have seen ponds with koi fish in them and beautiful lily pads. The fish seem to be almost pets and will come up to the surface for attention and feeding.
If you are gentle you can even pet the koi fish.
When my daughter decided she wanted tadpoles as pets, I suddenly found myself immersed in information about garden ponds (for which I now have a huge interest). I realise, too that garden ponds are not just there for their beauty but, and most importantly for what they mean to wildlife. With so much green space being snatched up by an ever growing global population we will do wonders to wildlife by adding ponds to our gardens.
Interesting articles which provide further insight into this interesting hobby.
