When we decided it was time to learn how to start our own garden we were a bit nervous to say the least. After all what did my wife and myself know about gardening? Not much more than childhood memories of having a garden at home.

Well I am no pro gardener that’s for sure but I have learned a few things about how to start a garden now. The key in my mind has two points to it.

1. Don’t let yourself get overwhelmed

2. Pre-planning well in advance will give you the edge.

These two points are the areas that kept me from doing a much better job on our first gardening attempt. It seemed like so much to do in such a short time but that was because we waited until the last minute to decide we wanted a garden of our own.

Not much of a harvest last season but a lot of learning that will benefit us this coming season.

Pre-plan Your Garden

Look at the space you have and the amount of light that hits that space. You can’t grow a good garden with out proper light.

If space is sparse due to lighting try container gardening so you can move your containers around to utilize the light as much as you need to.

We did this last year with our tomatoes and it worked great.

NOTE: We did have to water the containers a lot more than the part of our garden that was in the ground. You can also use products that hold water, like they put in diapers.

The best way to learn how to start your own garden is to dig right in and start learning today so you are ready when it’s planting time.
