2009 Raised Bed Gardening.

The soil we have on our two properties is like concrete. It almost takes a jack hammer just to break the soil up and then it just stays all clumped up in big clammy pieces. The the soil has to be treated just to make it grow more than weeds so, we decided to save our energy and start using raised beds.

Last year we didnt’ get our timing quite right so we had a rather late harvest and a lot of what we planted didn’t grow long enough to even harvest, but we learned a little about the soil we have.

This year we are starting with raised beds and containers.

We already have to big boxes, about 10ft by 3ft, that were used for flowers by the previous owners but I have already used one to plant strawberries last year. I think they will do great there and I will be able to control the runners much easier.

The second box, the same size as the first, has a big trellis with a bird house at the top, so I think it might be good for planting beans that can run up the trellis. I can plant them towards the back of the the box so I can plant something else infront of them.
