Reasons to Use An Electric Greenhouse Heater
Greenhouse gardeners living in colder climates who wish to extend their growing season or even grow plants all year need a heat source. Who wouldn’t want to be growing tomatoes in a greenhouse all year long! Most greenhouse gardeners prefer to use electric greenhouse heaters rather than gas or paraffin heaters.
Electric greenhouse heaters are always convenient and simple to use. With thermostatic controls you can program the temperature range you wish to maintain and then let the heater do its job. Some greenhouse gardeners go all out and install complete heat/AC systems to heat in the winter and cool in the summer for the ultimate in year round environment control. If you are going to build your own greenhouse, it only makes sense to enjoy it year round.
Factors to Consider when Choosing an Electric Greenhouse Heater
When choosing an electric greenhouse heater it is best to select one that not only has a fan, but a variable speed fan with an option that allows for blowing non-heated air. The gardener can simply circulate and refresh the air in the greenhouse by blowing unheated air. It is important that your heater includes a fan so you can minimize cold spots and avoid fungus problems due to air that is stale.
Typically, a larger greenhouse will require more heating capacity for the electric greenhouse heater. Be certain the heater you select is a suitable size as if the heater is too small for the size of the greenhouse it may run continually, causing overheating and a possibly a fire. A good size electric greenhouse heater is a 2,000-3,000 watt for most home greenhouses; it it neither too small to give enough heat, nor too large that it would expect to damage the greenhouse plants.
Electric greenhouse heaters may be permanently installed or there are portable models that may be removed from the greenhouse when not in use. Don’t have a power source near by? Learn about gas greenhouse heaters.
Whatever style of electric greenhouse heater you choose, be sure it is designed for greenhouse use to avoid water vs electricity issues.
